  • Buyer's Remorse

Hello everyone. I'm suffering from buyer's remorse. While on vacation to Sedona AZ, last April, I purchased into the Sunterra Club (now Diamond) for $12,634.00 and 4000 points per year. This also gives us access to Interval International. My wife and I are considering trying to sell our ownership, but since we made an impulsive purchase we don't want to be impulsive again and sell without doing our homework. Since we have not yet vacationed using the service, I have nothing to go on. I'm looking for some sound advice on DRI Club? Is it worth giving it a chance would it be better to try to get out while I can? Thanks for any info/wisdom that you can impart.

Hi. Just read your post over at TUG....you'll find a lot of the same folks here as there, and the advice will be the same. Above all, do not pay money upfront to a timeshare resaler. Good luck!

You can sell it! You'll get about $800, that's what the market is on eBay. It's quite a bit late for buyer's remorse. Learn to use it and enjoy it!

        Arlington,
        Welcome and hello from 02493.
Great advice from both previous posters.
Yes, learn to maximize your purchase and the the cost:benefit ratio will be in the vacation memories you'll get. You can make it work for you by picking the knowledgable brains here.
Just chalk it up to one of life's naive choices;we've all done a few by now in timesharing and life.
Hang in there. You're among friends.

Spend some time here. read, research, read some more. Ask the experts. Get the answers. Learn to use what you purchased and love it as so many of us have.

          Welcome to TS4Ms.

What Beags posted here is so true and you bought at a beautiful location and they have many others so read as much as you can how to exchange them the best way you can. Learn from the experts here how they do it. I have only stayed at one of their resorts and it was on Maui (Ka'anapali Beach) which is a very nice resort and with the nicest staff too. Since you are a member, this is well in your reach to go there one day.

Don't beat yourself up but try to enjoy your mandatory vacations. You have to take them now! So many people never ever take a vacation and they don't know what they are missing.

Many of us were introduced to timeshare in the same way so don't beat yourself up.

As others have said it's time to learn how to maximize and use your ownership. You won't get much for it on the resale market but you can get some really great vacations if you take the time to learn to use/work the system. There are a lot of us here that can help you out.

You never know. You could do like a lot of us and get hooked on the great vacations you can have using timeshare. We currently own 7 units and have taken some wonderful vacations. For us it's really nice having a home to go back to instead of just a hotel room. When traveling with family it's great to have seperate rooms but also the common area's of the living room, dining room and kitchen. It's been great coming home with clean clothes (many TS's have washer/dryers in them) instead of coming home and having to do laundry. We don't have to pack as much and that's become an issue with the airlines now charging for luggage. Many timeshare's have a balcony and I enjoy a morning cup of coffee and the paper sitting outdoor's rather than going down to the lobby of a hotel room to get whatever they've put out or have to purchases it in their coffee shop.

Timesharing can be a great way to vacation. At this point you'll be dollars ahead learning how to timeshare rather than trying to sell what you own. As Spence pointed out the resale market won't come close to what you paid.

                Thanks for the honest replies

Thank you all for the honest replies. The incentive that I took to go to the 90 minute sales pitch was a horse ride through the Black Canyon in Arizona with just myself and the guide. One of the most magnificent horse rides that I've ever done - so I guess in that sense it was worth it. So having resigned myself to the fact that I now own this without any chance of reselling, I'm open to suggestions on how to maximize my enjoyment of it. As I said, I haven't used it yet, so any advice will be greatly appreciated.

                  Better Shape Now!

Personally, I think you're set nicely now. 4000 points is on the light side and may not be enough for a week's vacation (depending on when and where you want to go). Now you have 8000 points to work with for 2009 and that's enough for just about anything.

I'd plan on one week a year. Decide when and where you want to go and get started! Make your first reservation thru The Club for 2009. Then save the remainder of the points to use in 2010. Keep that cycle up and you'll do quite well!

                  Enjoy!!!

Not too sure if you get the same as us, (European members of DRI) but there are half point bookings for less than 59 days, which also apply to Interval exchanges.

There are always places available, I think that unsold inventory that is not required for inspection trips is often added late in the day, making accomodation available that couldn't be seen earlier

                      Anthony,
Now that we're through the bad weather months, we hope that you will join us (please invite your wife, too) to the New England TimeshareForums lunch/dinner - whenever I get my act together and start to re-plan this fellow members.
                      Stay tuned.

Less than 60 day travel is very much available to US members! If a Club Member is willing to take the risk and accept what is available, and to learn what will be available ahead of time, then even 4000 points can easily be stretched into at least two weeks of 2BR unit vacations. God loveth (and blesseth) a careful, advanced planner!

                            welcome.

Why don't you tell us a little about yourself, what sort of vacations you like to do, who you normally travel with, where you like to go, etc... ?

In terms of enjoyments in life, few things come close to having forced, annual vacations! We all work to play (it should be that way, at least in an ideal world), but many here in this country forget this or plain get caught up in the cycle of everyday life craziness (raising a family, working insane hrs at work, etc) and then end up missing one then two then three then many more valuable, needed time off with loved ones. Next thing one knows, he is old and gray and everyone's left the nest and too busy to travel with him, he too old to go anywhere b/c he aches all over, he doesn't want to go anywhere anymore b/c he can't drive more than 20 miles without having to relieve himself, etc.

Enjoy your vacations today, don't wait for tomorrow. Tomorrow just guarantees one less place to visit, one less commited time to spend with your loved ones.
