DRI could be cutting their own throat if they're doing this. Who in their right mind would hand over $20,000 to $40,000 AND pay MF's almost as high as what they just paid to rent? It really makes that own vs rent arguement difficult to sell.

I have called and complained for years that I could not book into a DRI resort using the online ress. or call and get in, but I could rent the same place online for (fairly) "cheap". And I have whined about it at each and every chance I have had when we have done an owner update... Like why should I buy MORE points when I can't book in with the points I own now, but I can rent the unit... And the answer has allways been that the units that they are renting are 1)either units that owners have released for rent,2) stock units available at the last minute that the resort controlls for timeshare sales/promotions,3) units that are only controlled by the resort, 4) units that have been turned over to DRI by owners to get rent money... or more variety of the same.
I have never been happy that we couldn't use points to get into a resort, but they would take more money from me to rent the same units we wanted to book into at the same resorts that didn't have space using points... The ultimate answer from DRI has been to book 11 to 13 months in advance, pay the cancel. fee,"in case" we couldn't go, and to make "multiple booking" for any time we "might" be able to get to the resort. Which they will, of course, charge the cancel. fee for each and every booking made....(I don't have a money tree at this time in the back yard!)
Not what I want to do. And I don't have the option of making plans that far in advance. And as I told DRI folks, you got tons of money from me, I don't want to pay MORE in case I can't make it.
There are times, rarely, that I can book 2-4 months in advance, but it is rare! And with the cost increase for the can.fee, I am even less inclined to make plans farther in advance.
I have, however, been able to call a resort a few times and book in by having the sales person that we have used with there book us in last minuet. This is also becoming harder and harder to do.

All valid reasons! The key here would be how DRI goes about reserving "their" time that they're going to rent out. They obviously have the advantage in being able to book the primo times. Who knows how they have it set up to keep it "fair" to the rest of the owners, or do they even try?

If you cancel outside of 60days out, there is no cancel fee??

If you can't plan in advance, then timesharing is/was generally not for you!

Good for you, I can't use this approach, so I plan in advance.

$89 per night is not cheap. Way more expensive than RCI Last Call or II Getaway, or DAE or SFX sell-out.

Unless we are talking about $89 for a week, I will grab a week or two.

What? $89/night is quite cheap when we're talking about nationally advertised prices to the public. You can go anywhere do anything you'd like PeelBoy but you need to look at things in context, this was not posted as a "deal" for people like you but soley to point up the problem that owners have in seeing value in their ownership.

Spence, don't know if we get a refund if we cancle more then 60 days out. Will have to check on that, I believe that in the past that was true, but with us going on trips last minuet mostly it is something I just haven't checked on.
And you are correct- not uaually being able to plan more then 60 days in advance really does mean that Timeshare shouldn't be for us. We were, however, sold the points/units with assurance that the company lately know as Sunterra was set up to deal with that problem. And for many, many year it has not been a major problem, just the last year or so... like since DRI took over.... So I don't know if it is because of the way units are held by the resorts to rent ( like the $89 deal..) or if it is just they have sold so many more memberships and have not quite kept up with adding inventory to the company. That might be why DRI seems to by trying to buy a lot of other companies. But I am not sure that will help, the other companies have resorts that we could use, but they also have there own members that will now have access to the units in DRI... it is gonna be intresting.
