  • San Luis Bay Inn Renovation

Just got back from San Luis Bay Inn and they are currently renovating the lobby and the steps leading to pool. Not too much of an inconvience because they allowed access to elevators. I was told this renovation would last 8 more weeks. Also, starting in January the units in the main building will be renovated. Only 6 will be done at a time so availability will not be impacted too much. No projected completion date on the room renovations was given.

thanks we will see in Feb 2009 how the progress is.

BTW, this past Feb or so when were there, they were working on the roof to the cabana bldg next to the pool. the wind picked up at times and blew dust/dirt (and whatever other crud was on the roof) to the floor. I acually got some stuff blown in my eyes. It was not pleasant , they (workers, mgmt) need to be aware of customer and unsafe situations : (

I am looking forward to going to this resort in March 2009. Can you please give us a review of this place? There is not much in the reviews about this resort.

Not much to do at the resort, but surrounding area offers different things for different ppl. There is also Avila Beach, good place to just stroll and do NOTHING.

        - first SLO is San Luis Obispo, the main town in the area. :

I went to college there so normally our visit encompasses a visit to the university in SLO. the following are a few things to do, though there are alot other things others may give input to:

farmer's market in SLO on thursday night
        downtown SLO - many shops
        Mission SLO
        Morro Bay
wine country nearby (I never been but others say good things)
Salvang - never been but will in Feb!
Hearst Castle - must see IMO

        useful links

San Luis Obispo, Hearst Castle, and other California Central Coast information.

        Note, there's a costco about 6 - 10 min away in SLO!!!

          St Luis Bay Inn Review

This was my second stay there in 2 years and both visits were very enjoyable. Rooms are not luxurious but are clean and well appointed. I stayed in 1 bed room both times and it was large enough to not feel cramped. I saw the studios and they looked like a basic hotel room, a little small for my tastes. There is a main building that was the orginal building and two wings were added later. Although I could not get a straight answer from manager, I believe Diamond owns the two wings and the main building belongs to Wyndham. At any rate you want to request an oceanfront or oceanview room about 2 weeks before your stay begins. Some of the rooms do not have very good views. You will generally overlook some of the ocean or the golf course on the inland side. The one bedrooms have pretty large balconies. There are four floors and they are terraced back into a hill so that you do not have anyone above you. There is a heated swimming pool and hot tub, small exercise room, 5 gas grills, owners lobby with free coffee all day, video arcade room, and numerous activities daily. The grounds are impeccable maintained and the views are absolutley stunning.

I would recommend Fat Cats for breakfast, they serve it all day. It is located about 3/4 mile north of the Inn near the pier at Port San Luis. We like Rosa's and the Cracked Crab in Pismo Beach. Tried other ones but we liked these the best. Jocko's in Nipomo. about 20 miles to south, has some of the best steaks I have ever eaten. If you go there make sure to make resevations because the wait can be up to 2 hours. Rustic place and prices are incredible for the quality and quantity received.

If you like to send me a private e-mail with your e-mail address, I will send you some pictures.

Please post your pictures here. Thanks for the review.

We have stayed in the studios in the past....got the exchanges via RCI Management internal preferred status exchange (now Wyndham). We loved the area but the units were too small for our needs. They did need to refurbish the Wyndham wing of the resort. I believe this used to be a Glenn Ivy Resort that was taken over after they BK'd so the wing is a bit older than the Diamond (formerly Sunterra) wings.

Avila Beach is known for being sunny before the rest of the coast in the area. Most of the beach area was rebuilt by Chevron due to major underground contamination. Did they ever complete the downtown area near the pier? They were supposed to build a couple of small resorts and more shopping. I see that they did complete the Avila Lighthouse Suites Avila Beach Lighthouse Suites | California Oceanfront Luxury Hotel | Central Coast | Official Site Are they nice?

The Diablo Canyon Nuclear Power Plant is just 8 miles north and the entrance is at Port San Luis. Jim Zim works there and has a web site with many great pictures of the area and discusses the safety of the plant.

He also has aerial photo's of the area including the resort in this picture.

Posters said San Luis Bay Inn is beautiful but not luxurious. This isn't a Marriott and Avila isn't Newport Beach. But it is a real jewel.
I consider it my Home Resort and have 2 non-Diamond weeks there plus availability through my points in Diamond. While Wyndham/RCIM is the management company Diamond handles sales. Reservations are split accordingly for multiple owners. The sales through Diamond are for units in the B and C wings, but I can book their via RCIM too, although I own and request one of the end 1 bedroom Imperial units in the A wing. (B and C are called Regal 1 bedroom)
The rooms are decent, well furnished and clean. The B and C wing units are smaller than the main A building, but full kitchens not been an option in the A wing until recently.
The resort itself has tried to maintain and fund dining and more things over the years, but it just hasn't been viable. Front street Avila Beach is an easy and enjoyable walk and the Custom House is good dining. (far more upscale than the Original was before they literally tore up the town and rebuilt it)
Old Porte Inn is great at the end of the Port San Luis pier, and Fat Cats is a MUST every stay. You'll probably get discounts for Alex's BBQ in Pismo and a Fish and Chip place I forget... they are enjoyable.
Golf is right there, (along with another dining place I haven't been to in many years) I believe they have bicycles again, horseshoes (my brother-in-law "fixes" the pits when we stay there) and when I'm there I leave the slider open and listen to the ocean waves and barking seals... reminds me of when I grew up as a kid... IN Avila Beach! (1958-1969)
Thursday Night Market downtown SLO is a sure Not To Miss. BBQ and Ribs and TriTip and Sausage and farmers produce... absolutely an original.
If you wine taste at Kelsey's, tell them Mitch sent you! (my mothers cousin)

Oh, Jockos... if you like Red Meat, I cannot suggest any place better. Jenuine Oak Coals Kooks Our Steaks... sorry, but that's how they list it. If you get seated on the Left side, you'll be able to watch them cook, if on the Right, take a walk and check out the Oak BBQ. Come in an Monkey Around. (that's posted outside) and this isn't Little Jockos, that's a burger joint.
