I just received an e-mail from DRI about the 2009 Maintenance fees and Club Dues. Sign in to the DRI site and you can find the notice under the account section explainin the necessity for the fee increase to 10.04 cents for the US Collection. There are also explanations for the California and the Hawaii trust.

At least they acknowledge the need to put more towards reserves ... I would love to see the actual numbers!

Cheaper to Rent than pay MF's

I only have a small amount of points (4000) and with that I can usually get a week semi off season at a 2 or 3 bedroom unit. If these fees are correct, I will be paying 816.60 in fees with the $180 special assesment.

At this point I think I could rent a place for a week for much less than my fees. Am I off base here or are there other benefits to keeping my membership?

Smaller points membership have a higher overall annual cost per point because of fixed Club fee and a fixed Trust overhead fee if that applies. Get more more points and vacation more to drive the cost/pt down! Not sure what Special Assessment you're referring to.

          My cost are as follow:
          13,000 pts. California Collection - $1,305.20 Maintance Fee + $180.00 Special Assement = $ 1,485.20.
          10,000 pts. Deeded @ San Luis Bay Inn - $ 625.30 Maintance Fee (Increase of 6.16%) + $ 99.58 Property Tax.
          Diamond Membership Fee $ 235.00
I am just wondering if diamond will pressure the SLBI HOA to raise their maintance fees for 2010? A friend has only 2500 pts in the Calfornia Collection and was also hit with the $ 180.00 Special Assement! Ouch 7.2 cents per point for the special assement plus 10.04 per point for 2009 Maintance Fee!!!

The letter for the US collection lists a $180 assesment for this year. You are right about the non points fees being a large portion of my cost. Spense, I like the vacationing more part. With 2 kids in elementary school I could use more vacation time. Any volunteer baby sitters?

I posted my fees for 2009, however I just received my 2009 SLBI resorts update which shows our 2 bedroom maintenance fess. 2007 $ 589.00; 2008 605.42, 2.8% increase; 2009 625.30, 3.3% increase. Hope this clear up my previous post.

Just got my 2009 statement via e-mail. Here's how it breaks down:
                  ARDA contribution $5.00
                  2009 Cs1 Operational Fee $180.00 ($36.00 increase from 2008)
2009 Cs1 Fee per point (11,500 points) $1154.60 (slightly more than .10/point - roughly one cent more than last year)
                  2009 Club fees $235.00
                  Total bill for 2009 - $1574.60

So, is this $180 everyone's talking about a Special Assessment or is it just another name for what was the Base Fee assessment?

I don't know where you typically vacation, but @800.00 for a week in a 2 or 3 BDRM condo seems to still be a bargain, even in the off season. Remember - you're not just getting a hotel room. You've got a kitchen, dining room, living room, one to two bathrooms and free laundry - and lots more room than you'd have in a hotel. Just for comparison's sake. If you've got six people, you'd need 2 hotel rooms. You may be able to get a cheap hotel for $50.00/night. Two rooms would be $100. Over seven days, that's $700, plus any taxes, food costs and laundry costs. And you don't have all the extra room and ammenities at many of the TS resorts. Granted you may be able to rent a condo or TS from someone else for a little less, but think of the hassle every year trying to get a place and never being assured you will get a reservation. A TS also brings a little peace of mind that you will always have a place to go.

Don't know for sure. However, I think it's a base fee. I belong to the trust, so I believe it may be a fee to cover those expenses.
The statement specifically calls it an operational fee. I'm almost positive the Cs1 indication is for the Trust. In the past, whenever there has been any special assessments, they have been listed by that name. The special assessments usually come in a separate billing.

Yes, I think this is the Trust Base Fee, which is the overhead for administration of the Trust.

Sorry, you are right. They call is an operational fee not a special assesment. Here is a link to the letter

I agree, it isn't worth it for hotel rooms, but you can get a condo, townhouse or even rent someone elses time share for a fee that rivals all of the club fees. This is true especially in the Orlando area.

Club membership gives you some constants and does make looking for a place to go easier, but I would contend that the flexibility of not having to pay fees if you are not going to use your timeshare in a given year makes just going to rental an attractive option.

Of course as I said before, I might be off base on this.

I realize TS isn't for everyone. That's why people need to really look into what they are purchasing and how they will use their TS. For us, the peace of mind of knowing we have a place to go every year is worth the cost. In addition, it forces us to take a much needed vacation every year. We have also been able to extend vacation invitations to family and friends and always have such a great time. I have to take the responsibility for making vacation plans because my husband refuses to take on the task. I don't have the time to search out options and look for the best prices every year.
