  • Powhatan Beds

We just got back from a weekend at Powhatan. We asked if the new mattresses had been placed in the unit and were told that yes, all the 1 bedroom units had been upgraded. Well...a unit in building 5 must have been missed! The bed was extremely hard.

Does anybody know if they are wasting money on uncomfortable mattresses, or are all the new mattresses very comfortable? We stayed in a 2 bedroom unit last summer and it had very nice and comfortable mattresses.

We had a 4 BDRM unit. All the mattresses were new and VERY comfortable. The new mattresses are higher than the old ones. So you had to be careful you didn't fall when getting out of bed. BTW - How are the "renovations" going? Are there any obvious changes?

I can't speak to Powhattan specifically but, DRI has always had nice mattresses in their units. I can't say that I've ever slept on a hard mattress with DRI. It's been one of the more pleasant things we've felt we could count on with them. I do know that the bedding at The Suite's at Fall Creek in Branson was a high quality and very comfortable pillow top mattress. At that time, we were in one of their deluxe units. I currently hold two addtional reservations for this particular resort. In part because I know we'll get a good nights sleep there.

I am not sure about specific renovations, but when we were there for a week last June and stayed in a 2 bedroom unit, there were mattresses stacked all around that they were moving into units. That particular stay, we had the new mattresses and they were wonderful!

Generally speaking, when it comes to the condition of a unit, I can look the other way a bit if we can get as good night's sleep!

I am sure we will get a more in depth report after the owner's meeting. Isn't that in March?

I think I remember reading that it had been moved to March to give them time to complete the renovations. I don't own there - we really like the place and use our points to stay there. For many years, the resort has been under one renovation or another. Supposedly, there was going to be big push this year for major upgrades. The resort is a little worn, but very quaint and usually quiet. The only problems we've ever had were non-working hot tubs. But, from what others have written in this forum, I think there are some issues that need to be resolved. We're using our weeks in FLA this year, but will be back to Powhattan in 2010. Please keep us informed as to how things are going.

I'll be attending the annual meetings of both Powhatan and Greensprings in March and will report back here on this forum to update everyone.

I was at Powhatan last week and the mattress's were great!! We hated to get out of bed!! The unit was also very nice, new carpeting and furniture. Powhatan has always been our fav in Williamsburg, even over the Marriott, because of the grounds.

Powhatan has always been our favorite Williamsburg resort too. We usually take friends down and they absolutely love it there. Wish I had more vacation time. I'd spend more time there.

                  Hi Longtimer,
Peace and serenity seems to rule there. We LOVE walking around the grounds!

speaking of beds, does anyone know if they are the box under the bed type or a regular bed frame? I have 3 condos there this summer, and my father requires a hoya lift to get into/out of bed/wheelchair etc. The lift's legs have to slide under the bed in order to work; we won't be able to get dad into or out of bed without being able to slide the lift underneath?

When we were at Massanutten last year, the housekeeping unit came and CHANGED the entire bed so that we could use. It was a blessing.

Any guidance would be helpful. We will need a zero entry unit to get his electric wheelchair in and out. Do we call the resort to get a unit with a zero entry plus a bed with a regular bed frame?

                    Thanks,
                    Teresa

The one bedroom unit we were in had legs under the bed. I am not sure about units with the new mattresses. I would call the resort.

I've alwways stayed in the 2 or 4 BR units, so I can only tell you about those. I don't know if the accomodations are different for the 3 BR or 1 BR units. From what I remember, the bed in the master BR was of the box type. I believe the twins in the second BR may have been regular beds. I suggest calling ahead to see how they can accomodate you. In some of the units, there are a few steps even to get to the first floor. The private bathroom off the master suite has plenty of room, but has a tub that may be difficult to get into. The shared bathroom is very small and tight. There is a shower, but I'm not sure there's enough room to maneuver a wheelchar to get into it.
When you call, make sure you request a unit that is completely handicapped accessable and let them know your specific accomodations. Also keep in mind that Powhattan is very spread out and most of the paths are lined with stone. If your father wants to ride around in his wheelchair, he'll need to stay on the road. Be cautious - we've seen some near misses with pedestrians by drivers who aren't paying attention, driving too fast or not stopping at the stop signs. The three-way stop by the registration center seems to be quite a dangerous area. Enjoy your stay! Powhattan is very prretty and very relaxing.
