Tried to set up a unit less than seven days away and the DRI system said that it had to be at least seven days out. Has anybody rented on shorter notice? If so, how and was there a point savings?

All you get is the under 60 days 50% off rate or any other special rate DRI might have in effect.

You have to do under seven days by phone ONLY.

Some resorts require a minimum of 7 days reservation. Most of them are overseas destinations though.

It was at Powhatan, so maybe they are doing that in the USA now. The message on the screen said error due to less than seven days.

For the last few years they site would not usually show me what was avail. less then a week out. I did call them a few years ago, and they said that the site was not going to show less then a week/7days out avail. I have seen times that the site would not let me look for something if it was even 8 days away, depended on the time of day and the main. for the DRI site, when the were doing updates to their system, or so I was told when I called. Once it would not show stuff for even 9 days away- when I called them they told me it was a mistake...duh...
I have booked into Grand Beach in Orlando 2 days out, it was relly a little less, booked late on a Wed night for a Fri stay. I had to call the Res center to do so.
I have booked online, once, for less then 7 days out. It was a glitch in the old system... sometimes when I would put a check in the area for "my dates are flexable" I would be able to get info on open days/resorts for less then the 7 days out. However, most of the time it would show the info for the resort and days, and I would have to call them to book into the resort. (It also would show random resorts, say I was checking for Orlando, I would, and still do , sometimes get info on resorts in Powha./Virgina, Hawaii, or Calif, San Lou. resorts, DRI said that was not happening so I cut and pasted the screen showing the search and options and they said that it was "funny"...)
I also will have the DRI site up and a search going on when I call them for a ress. I have found that sometimes I will show something they don't have, and sometimes they will have stuff I don't see... but I have almost always gotten a customer service rep that was helpfull. Mostly...

Less than a week out has never been a feature of DRI's or Sunterra's sites. it used to be that you could put in for a week away with whatever the flexible date option was and it would return dates less than a week away but this disappeared when DRI revamped things on the web.

My understanding is that they have no intent to change the way it is now. It may be that their inventory control is just not good enough.

To get a reservation starting less than a week out you have to call the call center. If it is a next day reservation, the call center will normally have to put you on hold while they call the resort to make sure what they think is available really is available.

I'd think that they should be able to do better than that. For many years the website had specific problems with showing inventory at Williamsburg Resorts and St Maarten resorts that really wasn't available.

Short Stay booked online is never a problem

I don't understand why booking less than a week, say at Powhatan is a problem. I have reserved numerous times short stays less than 7 days online with DRI and previously Sunterra sites, without going through a live person.

I just searched. Put in a date and 4 nights and below is part of the long list:

                  The Historic Powhatan Resort

PeelBoy, unless I misunderstood the OP you're talking apples annd oranges. He talks about booking a reservation of ANY length LESS THAN SEVEN DAYS IN ADVANCE OF ARRIVAL and you're talking about short stays of less than a week but more than 7days in the future.

From about three times trying less-than-two days booking at Lake Tahoe, the call center said they needed at least two full days prior to arriving to make the reservation. Maybe this rule depends on resort
