  • Diamond Points info

    Hi,

If I purchase a set of points through the KBC Hawaii property with Diamond, and then want to add points through a resale purchase of a different Diamond trust, will I have to pay a transfer fee to "bring them in" to my original account?

If so...any idea how much that is?

The original contract is for 3500 points. The salesman told me that was a week at KBC, but after reading the disclosure document, I think that's about half of what I would really need...correct?

    Thanks!

Yes. Thje salesman is doing his thing...... if you find a week in the 59day or less time frame you can book it for about 3250. GOOD LUCK.

Yes, you'll have to pay at least $2995 to add an additional property UNLESS you negotiate your retail purchase3 to include any resale properties added within 12 months. Get it in writing.
... not enough time for all the timeshares ®

Thanks for the info! I haven't signed yet, so I'll ask them to include that phrasing for the transfer of points.

With the flat rate trust fee of about $200 to $250 added to your maintenance fee, the annual fees on that 3500 point contract will be outrageously high.

Unless you specifically want to own in Hawai'i because you want to go back to Hawai'i regularly, you would be better off owning in one of the other Collections. Then when you negotiate your window to add resorts, add the resorts to the same collection so that you average down that annual trust fee.

I just ran a search for KBC 6 weeks from now and there is a lot available. You can get a 1 BR Scenic View (which I assume means dumpster view) for 3250 pts, a 1BR Ocean View for 4250 and a Delux Ocean View for 5750. (Search old threads about KBC for some discussions about what these views really are).

Admittedly, these are tough times in the timeshare world. Even the Point at Poipu has lots of units in all categories available 6 weeks out and I don't remember ever seeing that before. However, I do know that I often see KBC units available within the 60 day window, even in good times. If you are flexible enough to jump at short term opportunities your 3500 points may be enough to get you to Hawaii. If you can't deal with short term schedules or you want a better view you will need more points. If you are in the Club you can rollover the 3500 points and get better views or longer term reservations every two years, 6500 points gets you a Scenic View next December.

But if the OP is going to work with the 60-day window, a Hawai'i contract is a bad idea. At that point there's no reservation advantage, and the annual fees will be much higher.

The only reason for the OP to own a Hawai'i contract is because the OP wants to be able to take advantage of home resort advantage, reserving more than 10 months in advance. And the 3500 point contract is too small to be effective for that purpose.

Actually, we do want to go to hawaii, but I can see the points won't get us much. Would I be better off not buying through the developer, buy through the resale market, and then "join the club?"
Would that work out better financially, or are there inherent benefits (for me) to paying the developer for the first group of points?

My understanding is that it would be much better to buy resale first. ( and get alot of cheap resale points) Then make make the best deal you can with DRI to bring them into the club. ( at this time that seems to be a flat $3000 fee with no purchase of additional points)

If you buy direct first, DRI isn't likely to give you much of anything when you buy additional resale pts.

If you're going to be in the DRI system for going to Hawai'i (meaning Po'ipu and Ka'anapali), the first thing you need to determine is whether you need to use the Home Resort advantage window to make a reservation. If the answer is yes, then you will need to own enough points in the Hawai'i trust to to make the reservations you want.

If the answer is no, then you want to buy outside the Hawai'i trust, at a location that has lower annual fees.

You next need to establish your strategy to get the points that you need into the club.
