Ok....I'm confused . Whats the difference between the Sunset and Mesa rooms besides the huge point costs?

Right now I'm assuming this:

Old and original part of the resort: Lowest point cost.
The new Mesa section (built under Sunterra): Middle level of point cost.
The Sunset section (started by Sunterra finished by Diamond): Highest point cost.

Am I assuming correctly? One thing I noticed on the amenities chart was the Sunset Two bedroom did not have a lock off nor guaranteed a jetted tub. Whereas the Mesa does.

Totally worth the extra point cost if you want the best. Original rooms are very dated (mauve), the Mesa suites are remodeled units and they are beautiful, sunset suites are new and are also very beautiful. With the 2 bedroom sunset suite you will basically get two master suites, that includes two ?whirlpool? baths. They aren't jetted they have the air bubbles that comes up from the bottom. Both the mesa & sunset suites have granite countertops, stainless steel appliances, flat screen TVs (exception to the flat screen tv is the mesa studio).

When I was there last month, someone staying in the original standard units said they felt like they were in the "ghetto" compared to the mesa and sunset suites. I've stayed in all of them and I would definately recommend the mesa or sunset suite. Unless they have recently updated the mattresses in the standard units, they are horrible! If you don't want to spend the most point amount the mesa suite will be just fine, they are gorgeous, you won't be disappointed. In the end you get what you pay for...in points that is.

We are planning to stay at SS this fall. Which of the two better unit types, mesa or sunset, have the best "red rocks" views? Can you ensure a good view by selecting a unit type or do the views vary significantly withing unit types?

There isn't really any way to ensure the best red rock views. Hope you have a great trip!

Do the One bedroom Mesa Suites have whirlpools?

Yes, the one bedroom Mesa suites do have whirlpool tubs, but the studio mesa suite does not.

Mesa rooms

I believe that the Mesa rooms are accessible rooms, so they have the following features (from DRI's site), and they are all on the 1st floor. They are still upgraded with the granite and whatnot, but if you are not in need of the accessible features, then things seem a little "off".

Disabled Access
* Lowered Counters
* Raised Toilets
* Roll-in Shower
* Shower Seats

I live in Arizona and stay at the Sedona Summit quite often, it's a wonderful resort located near several hiking trails. Definitely a better resort than The Ridge. I thought that the walls at The Ridge seemed a little thin.

I have stayed in all of the room types at the Summit (original, mesa, & sunset), and I usually book whatever is the cheapest available. They all meet my needs, and I find that my vacation experience is not improved by having granite countertops and a plasma TV. Others may disagree, but I wish they would stop increasing our maintenance fees on these frivolous items. Give me a clean, comfortable room with a comfy bed & functional kitchen, and I'm happy!

Exchanging by weeks into Sedona Summit

If one was to exchange into Sedona Summit as a fixed weeks owner what control do you have on which unit you would be given, if any ?

I'm still confused on the Mesa & sunset designation of the units.
I just returned from a RCI exchange and we were assigned unit 317 in Blgd 35
Check-in desk wrote 317m on my Key holder and said the m was for Mesa.
The unit we had however was not a Lock-off type. It was a straight 2-BR unit with two master bedrooms. Each bedroom had a wirlpool tub,walk in shower,Flat screen TV and king size beds. It was a ground floor unit with only a partial red rock view but was not handicap accessible.
Buildings 33 thru 40 are located in the newest section of the resort and the units are not lock-offs.
Buildings 20 thru 31 are located on the same side of Navoti drive in the next area over and are all lock-off type units.
Units 1 thru 19 are all located on the other side of Navoti drive in four different road loops. These are also lock-off type units and seem to be the original units.

Does anyone know what the Mesa and sunset designations really mean?

My confusion is everything I have read here says the unit I had was a Sunset but the front desk called it Mesa.
All the newer units are non lock-off type units and don't have water jetted tubs.
They have air blower equipped tubs instead. I much prefer the Water jetted tubs myself.
The bottom of the tub has several holes that a blower motor forces air thru creating turblance in the water. you can increase and lower the blower speed to control the level of turblance and it has a aternating setting. The control has 4 buttons and it takes some trial and error to figure it out.
No instructions on how to use these tubs were in the unit we stayed.
I didn't like this these tubs as when your sitting directly over a air hole the cold stream of air pushing against my skin felt like a sewing needle poking me. My wife said the same after she used it and we never used them again.
Another odd thing about these tubs is when you drain the tub about 5 mins after the water is emptyed the loud blower turns on and blows air thru the holes for several mins. First night I used it I got out dryed off but didn't drain it right away. fell asleep on the bed and the wife opened the plug to drain it and then went to sleep. We both woke to the loud blower running and jumped out of bed to see what was going on and how to turn it off.
You can't turn it off and it goes off by itself a few mins latter.
Its designed this way to remove any water that has filled the air holes and to prevent it from seeping into the blower motor.

The sunset room that I stayed was brand new two years ago and they were still building the ones behind our room, it had two master bedrooms and had a view of the mountains.
