So it seems the first contract was 2 years, and the renewal was 3.

I'm going to guess that the first one was three, not two, and just extended early. The thinking is: if RCI is a good partner, we can announce a renewal with a year left to ensure that neither side gets anxious, but if they are not, you have a year to renegotiate with RCI and open negotiations with II. Same thing happens here---extended after five years total, which would have been two years into a three year contract.
