  • I am in a bit of a pickle

I booked the wrong week for our Orlando vacation. I didn't realize it until today and feel really stupid. I was able to grab another week just now for the correct dates, the ones on our flights, this is the same resort. Now I have two weeks sitting there and can only go for one of them. The resort is super special, I have never gotten into this resort before. We are almost at that six-week point, where I can place this on Sightings/Distressed on TUG. Are there any other LEGAL ways for me to get rid of the week without losing my trade fee? Should I just cancel it and accept my error?

    Cindy,
Hope this is okay to ask, if not, mods please remove, but............ which week, how big and where ? I may be interested.
You can always PM me if my asking this isn't okay.
    Thanks,
    B

If you call II within 24 hours of your newest trade I bet they will cancel your latest trade, cancel the trade you had for the wrong date and use that week for the week you want. This way you will keep your next years week and will not have to worry about lost trading power.
      Good Luck!

I'm curious to hear answers on this one...we have Houses of Summer Bay (yeah, the nice house with the pool) for President's Week but it's just not affordable to make the trip next year.

I could return the exchange, but I think I'd lose practically all my trade power at this point (I've had the exchange for quite a while) so I'm trying to figure out what to do myself.

The problem with TUG's LMR column is that the $700 doesn't cover my maintenance and exchange fee, which I'd really like to do. I think at one point, Madge had said you could rent an exchange week if it was just to cover fees, but I guess we would have to ask her to clarify....

WARNING - there has been a recent crackdown on ebay, myresortnetwork and redweek regarding this situation.....do not go that way unless you want to lose it and possibley have your account suspended .

Asking 'friends' if they can use it would be adviseable at this point.....good luck.

Yes, I would never rent it out. As a matter of fact, I have turned people in for renting DVC weeks myself.

Wow...that's harsh. I don't think I could ever turn anyone in for renting a week, especially if they were just trying to break even. Good reminder, though, that even our little timeshare community here isn't necessarily a safe place to discuss some of these things....

Blatant rentals is different than breaking even on an exchange.

Actually, one person on redweek was renting a one bedroom at Old Key West for $1,800. This person still wanted the renter to pay the $95 fee to Interval, plus a Guest Certificate. It was an obvious rental. I asked the renter why he/she was renting weeks that were II exchanges. The answer, "I am just trying to share the Magic." I did rent the same from an owner, minus the weekend stay which was twice as much per night as the weekdays. I paid $1K for a one bedroom for five nights from a DVC owner.

I doubt if that was breaking even. Breaking even is different, making lots of money on exchanges is not. It is not fair for so many reasons.

                1. It lessens the value of what we own. If I am renting a premium week to get my MF's plus a little profit, and an exchanger offers the same week for $100 less to make money, it is likely that renter is going to pick the lesser expensive week.

                2. Renting such weeks is depriving others of weeks that are taken from exchange companies' inventories.

                3. Allows people who are greedy to make money on something when they did not invest any money.

One of these days the exchange companies are going to get smart and watch Guest Certificates closely. Until that happens, abuse will happen. Have any of you started the rental process and then found out that you were renting an exchange? It happened to me with a Marriott Newport Coast Villas rental. The dates were exactly what I wanted. When the "owner" sent the II confirmation with guest certificate, I had no idea I was breaking any rules by renting the week from this person. I just thought it was odd that this person pulled the exchange that I could not get. My dates were all around that week, but not for the specific week I wanted. Well, of course that is the case. If these people are pulling exchanges for renting, they aren't available to us.

If you are renting weeks, it is immoral and illegal. You can have your membership of II/RCI taken away.

There have been cases recently of people snagging many desirable II weeks and renting them out via eBay or other venues (redweek, my resortnetwork, etc.) II has really cracked down on this, and is aggressively pursuing people who rent out weeks. I don't know if RCI is also trying to crack down on rentals or not.

I agree that there is a big moral distinction between intentionally booking a week in order to rent it, and booking a week for your own use but renting it because something comes up and you can't use it yourself. However, I'm not at all sure that II would recognize this distinction.

As far as II is concerned, there IS no distinction. Hence, dealing with 'friends' is the only way to do this. Publically posting on the groups mentioned above will only get you trouble.

There are members of this board who have had thier accounts severely restricted by the other big exchange company because of alleged guest certificate use/abuse - I hope 3kids and shopgirl can solve thier problem under the radar.

I am going to give the week back this morning.

That might be the safe thing to do. The kids' friends seem to be unable to go at this time. That is too bad. I guess once they all graduated from college and got jobs, they just cannot take a week off whenever they want. Our son just got married in May and took his vacation for their trip to Puerto Vallarta.

Does a flexchange mean reduced trading power similar to an AC, or is it broader than that? Do I have to use the grid and look in specific areas? I have never had to cancel an exchange with II before.

Sorry to break in like this...but I'm confused about renting Disney points. Is this illegal? I was thinking about doing this since we've never stayed in a Home Away from Home. We can't afford to own a Disney timeshare, but I thought it would be neat to rent points and try it out for a week.

Can someone please explain to me why this is not the right thing to do? Thanks!

If you own Disney points, you can rent them whenever you want. Some owners get only $9 per point, while others are getting $11 per point.

According to Seth Nock, a great DVC points reseller, some people rent out their points and pay cash for cruises through DVC. They do this to get better choices. Some owners rent their points to others and use that money to pay for rentals instead of exchanging their points through II.

I think Disney is starting to look down at the renting of excessive points, like those that some of the resellers on ebay rent out. I rented 40 points, basically, for $500 and was happy to pay for a OKW studio for five nights. Those same points cost the owner less than $150. Some are making big money on the rental of their points. Many of these resellers have thousands of points to rent out and actually make a decent profit doing it. I don't see any problem with renting what you own! I don't see how Disney can change the rules on the rental of points, but these are right-to-use, not deeded, and there is a difference.

When we were looking at the trades we could get with II points, I thought the resorts Disney members were being offered were pretty good values. Disney exchanges only with the best resorts. I noticed that Marriotts on Hawaii through Disney were very reasonable, compared to the maintenance fees we pay for our Hawaii weeks.

I am not sure of the legality of it, I have rented them from others, never heard it was an issue, so long as the person renting is the "owner" of those points.

Actually, I just wanted to chime in to tell you that if you do rent, be sure to spend the extra money to get a decent sized unit. We stayed in a studio, just to have the true Disney experience, and it wasn't worth it. It may sound like a "duh" kind of suggestion, but we were looking to save money and still be at Boardwalk. We would have been better off at All-Stars.

We were much happier with our HGVC unit, but there is something to be said for being within walking distance of the action.

                            Good luck,

Thank you! I thought renting, period, was illegal. Ha! Duh me!
