Here's my take since I was also considering them both. We want to trade a lot. We might go to Disney every couple years, but lots of times we want to go somewhere else. We bought a 2BR Aruba Surf Club Marriott lockoff.

This lets us split the unit and get 2, well, actually 3 vacations a year. We get one vacation for the studio, one for the 1 BR and we also get an accomodation certificate for depositing our 1BR.

We can trade our studio and 1BR for 2BR units a lot of times because the trading power is strong.

With DVC, you just get those points. To buy enough points to reserve a 2BR, you'd have to buy about 270 points, which would cost over $22,000.

I paid $12,500 for my unit. So for me, the Marriott is a WAY better deal. Plus, you can trade into Disney if you can go in the off season or last minute.

It was indicated in the other thread of the same topic that Marriotts are deeded ownership for life. It is best to check the actual deed. Many deeds have dates in which they terminate. Grande Vista for example terminates in 2057. So while they are deded ownership, you may not own them forever.

thanks. also, thanks to the others that replied on the other thread. this is my take on your posts. dvc good for staying at dis. properties any time u want, prime or not. this is not to say that trading power is poor but not worth it. question though: why wouldnt trading 160 points for a week in aruba, maui, or anywhere else be worth it? 160points if what i would be required to trade for one week primetime.

marriott: cheaper. better trading power if u buy in desirable place like aruba/maui????? still difficult to trade for disney resorts if u want to stay during prime times.

hey vacationlover, can u please explain the accomodation certificate? also, when u trade the studio and 1br, what do u get in return? studio for studio and 1br for 1br or something different?
        thanks again for all replies!!

Repost from other now closed thread

Marriott and Disney are two very different products. I would NOT buy yet until you understand what that means.

You should NEVER use Disney for trading. You should ONLY use Disney for going to Disney resorts.

Marriott's can be used for trading. But, there may be better trading alternatives depending on your exchange aspirations. If you want to use Marriott's primarily, then buying a Marriott would be a good option. The one to buy is the key question. It varies depending on what you want to do.

I think we need to get a better picture of what you hope to do (where and when do you want to travel) in order to make recommendations.

Marriotts in Hawaii and Aruba are indeed in high demand, and thus excellent traders, but you may get where you want to go for less with something else... or maybe not Also remember there are higher/lower demand seasons/weeks at each resort.

Are you sure that Grande Vista terminates in 2057? It may be that a vote is required by the owners in that year to determine whether to keep the resort as a timeshare or sell it, but I don't think that the ownership terminates. Someone correct me if I am wrong.

I don't know what "promo" you're talking about, but don't ever buy a t/s from a developer based on "special for today only" pressure... the deal will always be there another time, and there will be a better deal resale (not sure how DVC resale prices stack up, maybe someone else can jump in on that note).

Go to www.disboards.com and find the timeshare store. They have a ton of listings. You should compare your deal to theirs. You may be pleasantly surprised.

                      jvincent,

My Marriott studio pulled a 2BR Marriott Manor Club in Williamsburg, VA and my 1BR pulled a 2BR Marriott OceanWatch in Myrtle Beach, SC. So for my one unit I got 2 weeks in 2BRs. I also got an AC (accomodation certificate) from II for depositing my 1BR. These have use limited on a grid printed on the certificate. It's mainly for off season stuff. However, if you search only 60 days out, the limitations disappear and you can get virtually anything. You do have to pay to use the AC. The highest amount is about $299 for a 2BR unit, which is not too bad in my opinion.

So, to recap, for my one unit for $990 in maintenance fees, I get 2 weeks in 2BR Marriott's, and for another $299 I can get a 3rd week.

I too own at the Surf Club. I love it! We do the same thing with the lock-off, but I was not aware I could get an AC with the 1br side. Do you own platinum or gold season?

                        Thanks.

I believe that some DVC owners have also had good luck with doing direct trades with owners at high end resorts. I have noticed in the past few months that a fair number of 1 bedroom July DVC weeks do show up in II. If 1 bedroom units are large enough and July is a good month for you, then there are definitely less expensive ways to go to Disney.

One other factor that you might want to consider is that the value of DVC properties has actually increased over time. The price for Boardwalk was about $67 per point when it opened. Now it can be sold for almost $90 per point. Obviously, this won't last forever. But it least initially with the new properties, you may be able to anticipate some price appreciation. Would that happen with most Marriott properties? I'm not sure...
