On the surface, it appears Disney is moving in the right direction. Adding Animal Kingdom, adding California, rumored Contempory, and now rumored Hawaii. If Hawaii does happen, one can only imagine the cost per point and maintenance fees.

The official announcement was last night for a proposed 800 mixed unit development. No other details were released other then Disney will be deveolping the plans over the next year. Opening date for the resort is to be 2011. About the same time as the new Disney cruise ships are to be completed.

Its exciting news, but I am going to hold back until I hear of them actually starting constructing.

Once Disney tries to go to an area not associated with one or more of their theme parks the results haven't been good. The ones they actually built have been poor performers and many, like the NYC one, never get off the ground. They are a one trick operation and standalone resorts are not one of their better plays. I wouldn't get too worked up about any plans they have for Hawaii unless it includes a new Disney park too!

Without any kind of tie-in to a Disney attraction its just another expensive timeshare. Hopefully they learned from their mistakes at Hilton Head and Vero Beach. I do think there will be combo cruise/Hawaii arrangements, but there will need to be more. Otherwise I will just use my Starwood for Hawaii and save my DVC for the parks.

I'm a bit surprised that the locals haven't had more opposition to such a big development. The articles I have read about this, I haven't read any such opposition as of yet.

I think that area has already been pre-developed for use by resorts. Besides, who wouldn't want to have Disney as a neighbor? Well, except those people in Anahiem who want to build the low cost housing developement.
