Thanks for all the good information here. I am still learning about other timeshares. DVC is not like any of the other timeshares and the points are so different from one to the other. I am going to learn a lot here and I hope I didn't offend anyone with my comments. I just wish I had known about the other timeshares years ago. I love DVC and wouldn't ever get rid of it. It has given my family so many great memories of family vacations. I just am glad I am checking into others. I have always heard using DVC to trade is not a good use of the points so I guess I will find that out soon. I am still in the thinking process and am glad I can get all the information I need here to decide which club will work for me. Thanks again.

      Merilyn,

To be on the safe side, if you buy anything else besides DVC, buy something you wouldn't mind using if "trading up" or "trading at all" collapses like a house of cards.

It's great having a II (Interval International) individual membership, but who knows if II will stay the same since IAC is spnning off II. I think some DVC members would be happy with being able to buy II Getaways, along with owning DVC points, instead of buying another timeshare. Too bad DVC doesn't work out some kind of deal with II where the membership could have access to at least 3 or 4 of those a year.

DVC isn't great for trading. As a DVC member, we don't get bonus weeks (which is a shame). If a Marriott owner offers a 1 bedroom to II for an "in demand week", II gives them an "extra" week or as it's called, an accomodation certificate. We also don't get trade-up opportunities on unit size.

But who knows what the future holds. I almost wonder if some of the big name brands won't develop their own exchange system some day and trade amongst one another.

The trades are really what I am looking for. I love the get aways that you can get with RCI. I have friends who use theirs all the time. I didn't know II had that option also. With DVC, you don't get that info. Ofcourse, we don't have to pay as much to trade with II or at least it appears that way.If only it were easier to trade. Is it worth just getting an RCI or II membership to use for trades? I don't know how much that cost but I guess over time it wouldn't be worth it. We love the Marriott trades we have made but never really tried for a hard to get one. Wish us luck with MB for summer. We may end up buying another timeshare and using it for our MB vacation. We just want a place to visit that is only a days drive and OKW and VB are surely not a days drive away. We would like the option to vacation more often since I have retired. The trip to Orlando is great once a year but way too far for more often. I gather you have a Marriott timeshare. We are suppose to visit MB and take their tour next weekend. Did you buy a resale and are you happy with it. I love Marriotts but buying direct is so high. Does a II membership come with it? I already have the pricing info which I was surprised they gave me in advance. Do you think we could buy gold or silver and get into summer there? They said yes but you can't always believe sale people. Thanks for the information.

          Merilyn,
You may want to consider some type of points system that has availability in Myrtle Beach like Fairfield or Bluegreen. We own Fairfield with our home base in Myrtle Beach so when we want to guarantee our prime time summer vacation there, we just pay the amount of points that we need to. Most point systems have the availability to trade through either RCI or II. Do your research on which trading system will work better for you before you buy. For instance if you like the thought of the possibility of trading back into DVC, then you need to purchase a points based timeshare that trades through II. Most of the Fairfields trade through RCI, but there are a slim few that trade through II.

I love both my Fairfield and DVC memberships. By utilizing both, I was able to stay 3 weeks straight onsite DVC this past summer in 1 bedrooms over the 4th of July holiday, 2 weeks at OKW and 1 week in BCV.

Because of the high demand of DVC trades in II, I do feel that DVC owners get the shaft regarding bonus weeks and the ability to "trade up" through II, especially given what they pay. A Marriott owner can possibly take a studio unit, deposit it into II and use that unit to trade into a 1 bedroom or larger. A DVC owner can't do this. If they want a 1 or 2 bedroom, they need to "pay" with a 1 or 2 bedroom. This is why it does not make sense to trade out with DVC and most people will reccommend purchasing a different timeshare for trading purposes.

To the original poster, congratulations, you got a great trade! and I know you will have a great time.

Merilyn, Marriott Myrtle Beach would be tough, as Marriott Myrtle Beach platinum week owners probably bought to use for the most part (if they can even book summer - probably multiple week Marriott owners book it at 13 months and beat out the single week owners who can only book at 12 months). So Marriott Myrtle Beach summer is tough even for a Marriott Myrtle beach owner!

If you're retired and can travel off season, II's cash Getaway weeks are wonderful. My cousin and I were looking at Westin Kierland and Sheraton Desert Oasis on a II cash Getaway for an off seasion 2 bedroom yesterday and it was right around $400 with tax! A great deal.

Marriott has nice resorts, but their maintenance fee annual increases are starting to get a little scary. The only thing I've ever owned with them is a lock off/every other year week (half the maintenance fees and we get a week every year by locking off). Other than our DVC points, a resort that's a day's drive from where we live was important.

Ray, congratulations on your trade. My sister just stayed at Manor Club and loved it. It's funny, but my sister would pick Marriott Grande Vista every time when she travels to Orlando. II tried to offer her a DVC resort for her Sands of Kahana Maui and she told them she preferred Grande Vista.
