Hello everyone, I'm new to the forum. Considering purchasing a HGVC unit. It comes with free 5k points from 2008 that must be used in 2009. My question is: Can I convert these to HH points before year end? If so , will this give me 125k HH points? Thanks!

Book a 2009 hotel reservations using your HGVC points then a couple of days later cancel the hotel reservations. HGVC points can not be returned to your HGVC account if you cancel your hotel reservations. They will be refunded as HHonors points. 5K HGVC points will yield 100K HHonors points using this method.
For more details regarding HGVC and HHonors points see this TUG post - Timeshare Users Group Online Community Forums - View Single Post - Hilton / HGVC advice article links

The only way you get the 25:1 ratio for HHonors points is if you convert your year's points before the use year. Otherwise, as katie mentioned, you only get a conversion rate of 20:1.
It is always a better deal to use your HGVC points for a reservation, or in RCI. Converting for hotel points is usually not a good trade. However, if you are going to lose those points, it is better than nothing.

NOT booking a HGVC reservation, right? Just needed some clarification. Thanks!

HGVC Elite Status requires a direct purchase from the developer.
Elite Plus requires an ownership of at least 24,000 HGVC points.
Elite Premier requires an ownership of at least 34,000 HGVC points.
HGVC Elite information can be found on the online HGVC Club Member Guide - Hilton Grand Vacations - 2009 Member Guide
