Advice and Help Need on a Recent Timeshare Purchase

Hello Everyone,

I just want to thank everyone in advance for any advice you post.

My situation is that I just purchased a Timeshare today at the Westin Lagunamar in Cancun, Mexico. I purchased a 1br (every other year) during the Gold (slower) season for $11,900. I don't know if this is a good deal and I can still cancel within 5 days.

I have to admit I was dazed and "out nice'd" by the salespeople and since I've never been to one of these sessions before, I had no idea what to expect. I asked to think about it for a couple of days and they kept me sitting there because of all the great incentives. But as I look on the web now and do some more research, I'm concerned about my purchase. I even looked at some of the resale websites out there and they're selling a 2br for the same price.

Should I just cancel this deal and buy something resale in the future?

Any advice will be helpful.

Run back there and cancel, get a signed receipt for your cancellation if delivered by hand, stay up all night for the next six months and learn all you can reading every post on this BBS.

So what do I have to make sure I do so I get this cancelled correctly? I know they're probably going to try and stall and change my mind. Do I make excuses like "I found your property for half the price on websites"?

Do I get refunded everything including closing costs? Or am I stuck with some costs for making a stupid decision in the first place?

What steps do I need to take to make sure I get this cancellation complete?

James, look thru the paperwork they gave u today.

Read EVERYTHING until you find the info about canceling (rescinding) your contract.
Then follow the directions exactly...EXACTLY. In all likelihood, you will not have to go back to the sales center - you will have to mail your cancellation to an address in the USA - just be sure to do exactly as stated.

You might end up buying Starwood again in 6 months, but by then u will have all the knowledge u need to make an informed decision...BTW, I am visiting that resort in November - glad u r enjoying yourself.

otherwise, it's a great place and I was tempted enough to buy a time share so if you want to stay here, it's a great place

Yes, I have visited many Starwood resorts using a week I purchased resale for under $1,000.

Please follow those directions exactly and then do your homework.

Don't feel stupid. You are not. You did your analysis, found this site, and canceled the transaction. That puts you ahead of 98%+ of those who purchase.

I recently had to cancel a purchase by my Mom and I emailed the sales department with a Re: purchasing a timeshare week, with a return request email and they opened it. In the email I referenced the cancellation letter that would follow and our decision to rescind. That was what I used as my other proof in case they lost the papers in the mail.

I would send certified letters, return receipt requested, to both the Orlando and the Mexico offices WHILE YOU'RE IN MEXICO and then again, also certified with return receipt requested, to both the Orlando and Mexico offices, when you get home.

You'll be paying for four different certified letters, but I'm the overkill type. Just think how much money you'll save with those letters. It's worth it to be sure!

I'll do the emails and certified mail for sure. Unfortunately, all the mail will be sent when I'm back at home in the US. I asked the front desk person today how I could mail anything and they're response "uh... the closest is in downtown Cancun"

Yea... I don't really feel like going all the way over there to mail 2 letters and my flight is tomorrow.

Thanks for all the support and advice! I really appreciate it. I'll also make sure to call amex to make sure they know that the "reimbursement" is coming and all the documentation stating that it should be coming in 15 days.
