  • At Marriott's Mountainside in Park City, UT

We arrived in Park City yesterday afternoon for a weeks stay at Mountainside. This will be our first full weeks vacation since my wife got sick back in Nov. or last year. For the most part, this trip will be spent relaxing rather than exploring. To many knots to get out of our ropes after the last six months to do much more than shopping and sight seeing.

My first impression has been that it's typical Marriott quality but they've perhaps used to many dark colors. The unit and resort just seem dark to me. I had a devil of a time getting any sort of decent pictures of the unit due to poor lighting. Our unit, as is the case with what appears to be a majority of the units from the resort map, faces the hill directly behind the resort. Mountainside is a very appropriate name IMHO. This probably adds to the preceived darkness as it puts the units in the shade.

I see an indoor pool on the resort map. I've only seen outdoor hot tubs and an outdoor pool without the indoor/outdoor feature that would allow one to get out of the heated water (the pool is kept at 85 degrees) without being exposed to the elements. IMO, not so great for swiming in the winter time as cold air can freeze water on swim trunks pretty quickly.

The resort is next to a plaza with several shops and restaurants. There wasn't a lot of them open yesterday when we arrived and some have the appearance that they may be seasonal as far as being open. We did enjoy the happy hour bucket of Corona's for $10 and chips and salsa at the little Cantina restaurant last evening. I hope to eat at a few of the restaurants which serve breakfast as well during our stay.

There is a small park with activities such as bunjie cord trampolines, miniture golf, alpine slides, merry go round and scenic chair lift rides that take you to hiking trails next door to the resort. Most seem reasonably priced and we plan taking the chair lifts at least once during our stay. I'm not 100% sure we'll want to do the alpine slide back down.

Overall my first impression is this would be a great ski resort and a decent location to base summertime explorations of northern UT. It appears to be quite the drive to the national parks in southern UT, which is something of a dissapointment to me but, I knew that coming in.

I have begun to put up a photo album of the resort and will be adding pictures throughout the week. The album can be accessed through the owners photo's link on my-vacationclub.com, by clicking the smugmug link in my signature below or you can go to the album directly by clicking this link dougp26364's Photos . I will be adding an album to our Webshots page as well but have yet to start putting up that album. Maybe I'll work on that while getting ready for the day this morning.

Now that it's Monday, you might be able to switch to a pool-facing unit with more open sky and truer mountain views - worth asking if you're up to moving.

A nice thought but, I hate moving. I think we'll just stay put and enjoy the week while watching what I think is a large family of woodchucks doing their thing on the mountainside.

I hate moving too, so I hear you. Looking forward to hearing how much wood a woodchuck can chuck. Or is that not what you meant by "doing their thing?"

Another great album, Doug. I am looking forward to the photos you may take from the scenic chair lift and your little hike in the area. It should be beautiful in the summer too.

                Enjoy your vacation.

I've updated the Mountainside album but am still missing a few area's such as the owners loungs, grilling area and the fitness center. I hate taking pictures of people working out, cooking or trying to relax in the owners lounge.

I'll put together a Park City album more towards the end of the trip and it will be a seperate album. I will still link it to my-vacations.com since other Marriott owners might want to see some of the surrounding area for idea's of what Park City is like in the summer.

If you happen by Summit Watch and the Westgate property, I would appreciate your opinion as to which location is best for summer visitors among the three.

Having had the worst timeshare experience at a Westgate in 2000 (sales staff literally harrased and even threatened us to get us to attend a sales presentation) I have no opinion on a Westgate property. Some report that it is a wonderful property and it probably is.

Summit Watch is in a more urban setting. It's steps away from Main St. with all it's shops and restaurants.

Mountainside is only 0.6 miles away but is more remote. There are TONS of activities right at the resort but, those activies attract the families with kids. Since it's summer vacation for kids, they really run pretty wild.

Moutainside has a very nice pool and some great hot tubs but, good luck getting to use them without the kids running, jumping, screaming and using water toys. There is NO restraints placed on childrens behavior by staff as far as I can see. They're just kids being kids but, they do make it a little harder to relax.

Mountainside has bungee trampolines, an alpine slide, zip line, a mountain roller coaster, merry go round, mountain bike trails, hiking trails, nice pool and great hot tubs but, wow is there a LOT of kids. Keep in mind that these amenities are for an extra charge. They aren't included in your stay.

Summit Watch is more of a shoppers paradise with Main St. only steps away. All the restaurants and shops are here. It's probably where we'll stay next time we come to Park City.

Park City has a great bus service that's free (donations are greatly appreciated) and it's simple to get from one resort to the other. So if one stays at Summit Watch and wants to take advantage of all those extra cost amenities, it's just a short bus ride away. Since these amenites close before the bus line stops running, I don't think it matters nearly as much which one a person stays at.

Sure I say I think we'll try Summit Watch next time but, if Mountainside is available and Summit Watch isn't, I'd have not qualms returning to Mountainside.

I am familiar with all three and have stayed at both WG and Mountainside. For a non-ski/ride trip I would definitely choose Summit Watch for its in-town location. I am limiting my response to the three you asked about.

We were by Summit Watch today. Much more subdued feel to it and the pool and hot tub was actually usable for adults. Right now, I'm listening to children playing tag or some other game in the hallway outside my unit. Sure I know kids will be kids but, a little adult supervision to keep them in line, just a little bit, would be nice. While I love MS's location, I'm thinking next time it will definately be SW.

I have added a photo album for Park City and some of the surrounding area we've seen so far. I'm sure I'll be adding more photo's as we see/do more things. I think this is a good start for now. What's in the album so far are shots from Main St. in Park City and our drives along the Mirror Lake Scenic Byway. We didn't do any hiking. All pictures are of scenes along the roadway or very close to the road.

The album is at Park City, UT and Surrounding area - dougp26364's Photos
