I would pay $ to see the look in the other guests faces if they only knew how little you paid as compared to them.
That was the #1 factor I used when I was looking at WM vs Marriott. I decided on Marriott now (and may get WM soon) as I need to plan my trips several months ahead (not the 59 day window). But during the summer, I could justify a family trip to the 4 seasons, if I could snag them for $375/week. Are the WM exhanges for 4 seasons available during the summer flex period???
Now how can you (or me) score a Ritz for the same price?
I got an FSA outside of flexchange. It costs a bit more. $535 pure cost. I'm going there on Oct 20.

I like Summit Watch, but it's not really in Marriott's top tier, in my opinion. On the other hand, I rank Manor Club right up there with Grande Ocean and Newport Coast Villas as the best Marriott has to offer.

Did you buy a WM housekeeping account?

My low cost portfollio.
Boca,
After some deep contemplation of you question I concluded that my perfect portfolio is most likely 0. Heres why.
On a recent thread Marriott Hawaii unit sale prices and maintenance fees were listed. If MF are 1250 and membership and trading fees are say 250 adn assuming I can rent that same week for $2,500 than my buying is saving me $1,000.
If I want to earn 5% on my investment I should buy that timeshare for $20,000. At 10% I could spend $10,000. At 20% I could spend $5,000.
I'm a 20% plus kind of person so I am looking for a Plat Marriott for $5000. Needless to say I am not holding my breath. If I ran into it fine. If not fine.
I generally travel during gold season where Marriott inventory is usually available without needing the Marriott priority.
On a side note I was just reading National Geographic Traveler magazine and was intrigued by some customized tour outfitters in some international vacations. I also intend to add one or two cruise vacations to some interesting places each year.
As much as I like staying in timeshares with a kitchen and living room they are not always located in a convienent location nor is a fixed 7 day stay with fixed checkin day that you have to book a year in advance the best way to see the world.
If I can keep my domestic exchange cost down below $1,000 I then do not feel bad about only staying 4-5 days.

Short,
Your model Marriott portfolio was the same as mine until last month. Angela kept teasing me every single day with Marriott sightings that I actually wanted. I could never see them due to the Marriott internal preference period of 3-days or 21/24-days.
As soon as I bought the cheap Marriott, I cracked through that barrier for flexchange. I got my first one on the very first day of ownership. The second one in the same week. It worked like a charm.
Now, I want to crack it for the 21/24-day period.
My last need is just for trophy properties. These you collect and own just for fun without any regard for economics.
Some on my list for trophy properties include: A fixed week in the new Hyatt going up in Maui, a 2 bedroom Oceanfront unit at Ocean Pointe Platinum. A 250 point DVC in the Beach Club, a 4-bedroom River Island penthouse unit.

Wait until Marriott intros points.
Boca,
I currently have a couple Plat. GOT weeks 850 + exchange fee to break the 24 day barrier and a couple AC's to use during flex time during the next year.
Once they are used up I think I'll see if I can use the neighbors parents weeks for my Marriott needs. They are always having problems using up there deposits.
This my way of keeping my initial investment down.
If and when Marriott comes out with a points system I may reconsider my Marriott portfolio. I've now got 3 years worth of Marriotts in my own account so I can wait.

Yeah, I can't wait until they get a point system. There are always great bargains that manifest themselves when a weeks system turns into a point system.
At a minimum, they need to create a conversion program. That is where the potential benefits start.
Then, there will be tiers of ownership where the benefits accelerate.
There will be a way to use the conversion program to get to the highest tier for really cheap.
Those who learn that game will be the largest owners in the system.

Absolutely. Lots of free seats available in those classes for people like you.
The biggest issue is that it takes a lot of capital to get to the highest tier. So maybe what we can do is pool a lot of capital, buy a bunch of weeks, convert them and then deed the pieces back to the individuals who participated. Everyone then gets Platinum VIP benefits, whatever those turn out to be.
For me, if they allow Platinum VIP owners to pick the unit that they get (including the view class) when they book a reservation, then that would be worth getting to that level.
Getting first dibs at prime locations would be another one that they always give out.
No housekeeping fees for partial week stays would be another one.
There are plenty of features that they will create that will make it worth getting to that level.
