Marriott require copy Passport

I was in the couse of a sale of one of my timeshare weeks when Marriott asked me to provide a copy of the purchasers Passport.
Allowing for the fact that few US people have a passport have any of our members come accross this condition ?
To request me to obtain this information seems most unreasonable.In these dangerous times ,providing copies of private information seems most unreasonable.
The deal is now cancelled.
Would be intersted in your thoughts and comments.

No, not yet as we just sold a Marriott timeshare. It was never asked for.

Marriott now require a copy driving licence instead. Do I have to deal with Marriott Europe to sell .?..seems it is not a requirement in the US.

Garry, you do not deal with a Realtor when you buy a timeshare condo but you can always contact the State Board of Realtors and ask for a referral name of a qualified real estate attorney and contact him to get an answer for your questions. Some of them will give you one free consultation. Besides a real estate attorney, you can also contact an escrow company who deals with many timeshare closings in and out of the country. They should know but I would ask the Marriott too why they want all this information.
