  • Marriot Resales

Can anyone confirm that if you buy a Marriot resale that you lose the opportunity to convert your weeks into Marriot points every other year? I have read this in a couple places and would hate to lose that opportunity.

Also any idea on where the best Marriott traders are? We like beach stuff mostly but would consider other area's given we have two little ones.

    Thanks for any insight!

Any interval not purchased through Marriott will not qualify for MRP surrender rights. Be aware Marriott sells "resales", like intervals they have acquired at sold-out resorts through various means, like foreclosure or ROFR. Such are priced much higher than normal resales but do attract the surrender rights.

      bears4jen....Welcome to TS4M's

Yes, is it true that if you purchase resale, you loose your ability to trade your unit every other year, for points. However, you will probably save yourself about 40% of the retail price.

Unless you are purchasing pre-constructions prices, and don't want to wait for resales to hit the market, I would strongly recommend that you buy resale.

Many people feel that between the cost of the unit, and the high MF's, trading for points isn't a good deal. You would be better off renting, or exchanging your week. Also, you can purchase up to 50,000 points directly from Marriott, on a yearly basis. So, that would give you the same 100,000 points, every other year.

If you change the way you look at things, the things you look at change.

BTW, I'm still keeping track of how many times you annoy me.

I have bought just to get points. I have never bought a high end week like hawaii to convert into points. MF is very important when you look at buying for points. Marriott is getting at the point that the Reward points is not becoming the value that they once had. So you need to make sure that it works out for you before you buy just for points. I get about 1 million points a year but I bought Monarch weeks 7 years ago and the rules have changed since I bought.

            Angela,

I believe my children are spoiled because with these points both of my kids are Gold for life with American Airlines and they are only 23, and 20 years old. We live in the Dallas Fort Worth area and this is American Airlines hub. Every body has different vacation needs and that is what makes timesharing so much fun. I have goals that I am trying to achieve with the weeks we own and when I retire provided my health stays good we plan to travel about 5-6 months out of the year and have my other timeshare rentals pay for it all. We will see if this plan works. It is an objective and in the mean time, make those memories with your loved one.

I agree, your children are very lucky.....Your plans for retirement sound great. It's wonderful to have such a bright 'vacation future' to look forward to. I'm only slightly jealous. Good Luck!!!

When you buy a Marriott resale, do you still have the ability to exchange the resale within the Marriott system for other Marriott timeshares? What about the membership in Interval International?

Yes to all...it's just another Marriott timeshare as far as exchanging is concerned. II handles most Marriott to Marriott exchanges, though independents can do them and so can owners (direct exchanges). IIRC, there is a lower cost-fee, 89.00, for M to M exchanges through II, which is substantially less than normal exchanges.
