  • Marriott - II Exchange

    Question:

I want to put in an on going search for a Hawaii exchange at one or more of the Marriott Resorts. Am I better off using a low season Marriott unit (late February Hilton Head) or a high season non Marriott unit (July 4, Lake Tahoe - 5 Star)?

Marriott Hawaii can be a difficult (or should I say used to be!) exchange using a non-Marriott week because of the combination of demand for Hawaii in general and the 24 day Marriott preference. I think it will depend on the time of year you are asking for and the lead time.

If you are more then a year from check-in, I would try it using the non-Marriott week - say for Late Sept/Oct/Nov 09.

If you are a year or less and want a more popular time - such as Jan-April, late June-August....any holiday week, I would use the Marriott week to have the preference advantage.

Is there a reason not to enter the request with both weeks? That way, you've got all your bases covered.

Yes you can put in two requests with II. It would of course cost you two exchange fees, with the non-Marriott being higher.

Assuming you are looking for a 2BR unit:

You will have virtually no chance of getting a Marriott "high" demand week in Hawaii using the non-Marriott week as a deposit (unless it's last minute) , because Marriott owners will have a preference. There are several Marriott owners writing about their frustration in getting prime 2BR units in Hawaii for summer 2009. One in particular deposited a premium 2BR summer week at Manor Club and finally gave up trying as she needed to book her airfare.

Assuming you are looking for a 1BR unit:

There are LOTS of 1BR and studio units available in Hawaii and you can probably get a high demand week with either of your deposits. The Marriott will most likely get it first, provided it has enough trade power.

        IMO

The other side of this is that you can offer to pay a second exchange fee to get a 1BR and a studio....and II will be more then happy to accomodate you if there is availability for your dates.
