  • Marriott cutting costs... Less free newspapers!

FT.com / Companies / Travel & Leisure - Marriott to discontinue paper delivery

Article regarding Marriott decision to reduce the numbers of complimentary papers at resorts and hotels. Doesn't seem like a big deal, but when you check the numbers- it could be another big blow to USA Today circulation.

I wonder just how long actual newspapers will manage to hang on.. The buzzards seem to have been circling for some time now!

Years ago our Fl resort stopped delivering "free" newspapers as part of your stay. We liked that and missed it. But when the return of that service was suggested (it would add about $3 to the annual fee at that time - would be more like $6 now) the idea was soundly defeated in a poll of owners. I guess those that want it can go down to the gift shop and buy one.

I'm like you in that I'd miss it if it wasn't there but, some of the resorts we go to don't deliver the newspaper and I can't say it affects our vacation all that much. The odd thing is, if it's not delivered to our doorstep without cost, I don't bother to pick one up. Maybe once during a weeks vacation will I pick up a newpaper if we go out to breakfast but lately, considering where the cost has gone, I'm more tempted to keep that dollar or two in my pocket.

For what the newspaper costs, wouldn't it be cheaper to just make internet service available for free to all guests?????

To twist the phrase often incorrectly ascribed to Marie Antoinette's words a bit: "No newspaper? Let them read internet!"

In the Marriotts in Europe they are reducing the daily maid service and going forward the service will be provided on a daily basis for Owners only.

I got a Kindle 2 about a month ago, on which I recieve the New York Times seven days a week, delivered wirelessly over Sprint's cell network while I snooze---at least, as long as I'm in the US.

It solves this problem very nicely.

At first I was convinced it was nothing more than an expensive toy---I would not have bought one for myself, but I was pretty geeked that my wife used our money to buy one for me. Now that I have it, if I were to lose it tomorrow, I would instantly buy another one.

I check out London's Daily Telegraph every morning online.

Ditching USA Today is a wise idea as that paper is a mullet wrapper. It has always annoyed me to be in a hotel in a city with one or more great real newspapers, like Washington.DC, and instead of one of them you get the really substandard USA Today instead. Now if I had been getting the Washington Posr or Washington Times at the door and those stopped, that would be a loss. But USA Today, who cares!

When I worked in Berkeley there was a great authentic fish-and-chips shop down the street from my office. Thee proprietor wouldn't use USA Today for fish wrap; said it gave the fish a bad flavor. Instead he used the San Francisco Chronicle.

Personally I thought he should have used the Berkeley Barb. It always seemed to me that fish wrap would have been a higher and better use for that newspaper.
