Marriott rentals

Seems there are at least 2 versions of the Marriott Rental system . Reading the FAQs on the US site , I was under the impression if offered and accepted by MARRIOTT a cheque would issue shortly afterwards.
So I gave my 2 weeks to Marriott Marbella (conseq weeks in June 2010) and was accepted .Paper work etc all fine .
I rang to see what happens next .
Was surprised to hear that I will not hear from them until July 2010 !
Only then they will tell me if my weeks were used and what amount I will receive. Also if only one night in each week is used ,I will get paid for that night only and the rest of the week is just lost.
Why would let them have 2 prime weeks for maybe 2 night rental ? Seems a crazy system .(Gray Fal had alerted me)
So have withdrawn my weeks

It has always been like that as we rented once through the Marriott too many years ago. We never found out beforehand if the week was rented or not and not even during the week, when it was supposed to be rented, as they couldn't tell us. This was before the Internet. We only found out when we received the check several weeks later. Needless to say that we didn't do this a second time around as it could have been rented for a single night only but we lucked out. We rented it on our own after that until my husband was retired.

There is a rental contract you can buy from TimeSharing Today. Someone else posted a rental agreement too but I can't find the link as I don't remember who it was.

Yes, it definitely was an 'iffy' system which is why in the US, they have changed it BUT the down side is that Marriott determines the 'worth' of your week which is now significantly less then what people used to get.

My advice is to rent it on your own thru Redweek - also place a free ad on TUG.
Or do a direct swap with another member....

Also consider the fact that MOST resorts and hotels are not even close to 100% occupancy. Due the the soft economy I can only imagine that many Marriott owners have turned there weeks into Marriott, either for points and/or for rental. You would be competing with those units. IMHO, there is a very good chance you week will not be rented at all if your turn it in to Marriott for rental.
