  • Does Marriott Recognize Resales

Before I proceed with a Marriott TS purchase, I would like to know if Marriott recognizes a purchase on the secondary market for trading within the family of Marriott. I was going to purchase a Diamond International property and then learned that I could only go to that property or trade to RCI/II. I'd like the ability to move around within Marriott. Any assistance would be appreciated.

Marriott has no internal exchange system yet so you need to exchange through II or any other independent Exchange Company. Some Marriott resorts even exchange with RCI and II. There are rumors that they may introduce an internal exchange system but it hasn't happened yet. The rumors have been flying around for several years already.

If you buy resale, you have all the same features that owners have except for depositing your week and receiving Marriott Reward Points for your exchange but anyone can belong to the MRPs system too by staying at their hotels and accumulate enough points to have a free night at one of their hotels.

If you buy from the Marriott direct, they will toss in a lot of MRPs as an incentive. Not worth it if you can buy it so much cheaper on the resale market as the points get devaluated over time. This has happened a few times already.

I will second what iconnections said - as of this time, ALL Marriott to Marriott trading is done thru II.
There are also independent companies that will take your week in trade.
There is no internal Marriott exchange program.

For all Marriott owners (direct & resale), II gives what is called a Marriott preference. It means that for the first 24 days a marriott TS is deposited with II, only other marriott owners can try and get that trade. If your marriott TS does not have enough trading power to get the trade, you will not get it even during the 24 day marriott only period. BUT if you have enough trading power to get the trade, you'll get it before other TS deposits outside the marriott family.

I had no idea. Does not sound like equitable or true preferential treatment for Marriott owners.

            Why doesn't it seem equal?

Why should a studio silver unit in Florida trade for a 1BR ski season Platinum in Utah?

With Wyndham and Starwood, both point systems, the amount of points needed to book those two reservations is very difference. If u don't own enough points, you can' make the reservation to stay at the higher time/demand resort. At least with Marriott and II, you have other options.

              Example:
2BR at Marriott's KoOlina is deposited with II and becomes available.

There are two people waiting for that week with equal trading power.
A studio unit at Marriott's Canyon Villas in Arizona
A studio unit at Sheraton's Desert Oasis in Arizona

The SDO is excluded from making the trade for the first 24 days.
The Marriott CV studio is not strong enough to get the trade.
24 days later the SDO unit can now "try" to make the trade but cannot because it is not strong enough either.
A 2BR SDO deposit comes along and gets the trade because it has the trading power.

note: This is very hypothetical and will most likely not happen as there are almost always Marriott owners waiting on those 2BR's in Hawaii who do have the trading strength.
