We are a young family of four considering our first vacation investment. I was just about sold on a fixed week purchase at the Sheraton Vistana in Orlando but stumbled upon an interesting opportunity to purchase 30K in RHC credits. I like the idea of greater flexibility as while the children love Orlando and I could foresee vacationing there for the next ten years, it may be nice to explore other areas. Will 30K net us decent vacations during the summer? What advice can you offer this newbie?

The short answer is no
30k in points isn't enough to book a 2 bedroom unit anytime, summer time at the High Point resort in Orlando will run 40848. Also your annual costs per point will be way to high. Look for a 70k or larger package, like 70K Points GOLD CROWN Royal Holiday PLATINUM Timeshare - eBay (item 360160180528 end time Jun-08-09 19:00:00 PDT).
then you can really utilize their system.
fwiw,
