  • My Trendwest Sales Experience

I went to a Trendwest sales presentation in Elk Grove, California last week. My wife and I have been interested in a Marriott Timeshare up in Lake Tahoe for some time now ... so we thought that we would look around and give Trendwest a shot. The following is what took place:

    1. Our primary salesperson, Suzanne, was absolutely wonderful. Very friendly, a great presenter, and a value to Trendwest.

    2. The sales supervisor was extremely combative. When I told him why I was leaning towards purchasing a Marriott Timeshare instead of Trendwest, he told me that I was lying to him about the conditions of the Marriott package. I them told him that I could "guarantee" that I was not lying, and he then pulled out his cell phone, and told me that if I wanted, he could call a Marriott rep "right then and there ..." and if I was wrong, then I "needed to purchase a Trendwest package from him that night." When I declined, he then said that I was not "a man of my word."

    3. The second sales manager was about as bad. After being there for nearly 2.5 hours, he finally told me that the interest rate on Trendwest packages was 13.3%. I told him that it was too high, and I could do better on my own. This person then berated me and said, "I don't think your credit is good enough." So much for that tax write-off.

    4. When waiting for my "gift" for being insulted repeatedly, the exit interview rep (another manager) reviewed my information, and then proceeded to ridicule me for working in Federal Law Enforcement. He then told me that he "could not believe" that I did that for a living, and proceeded to give me a look as if I was lying to him, and then he shook his head and simply said, “here is your gift, Secret Agent Man.”

    5. I work for an organization with over 25,000 employees, and have liaison contacts with individuals who literally represent hundreds of thousands of people. I will be sure to let everyone I can know about how I was treated by Trendwest "managers", and also make the point well known that Trendwest is not supportive of law enforcement.

    6. I am using my "gift" that Trendwest provided me to spend time with Marriott representatives in Lake Tahoe, CA -- where I will purchase a timeshare from them.

I can honestly say that this was the worst sales experience I have ever witnessed. The worst part is that I feel terribly for Suzanne ... she must be losing sales hand over fist as a result of her combative, unsupportive management team.

Trendwest has an interesting product – one that I could see myself purchasing. That is, until their sales managers got their hands in the pot.

I guess it was pointless for me to transfer that $25,000 into my checking account before heading to the sales presentation ... just in case.

Sorry to hear about your bad experience. You can buy an account from resale. It's almost as good as you buy from the developer with less than 1/2 of the price. The different is the stupid TravelShare program which is worthless in my opinion

IMHO You really need to hold off for now and investigate the re-sale market for both the Marriott and Trendwest and others. This could save you thousands if not over ten thousand dollars. Take your time...no hurry. Read and ask questions here and at tug. Don't let that money in your checking account burn a hole in your pocket.

Many of the sales people and management in timeshares are horrible (some are good)....but that should not be the deciding factor into the amount you spend or what your purchase.

The usual mantra here is never buy from the Developer except in certain cases. Stick around...you are welcome here. There are experts on Marriott and Trendwest who can help you see all the angles.

Wow, I cannot believe they would treat you like that. I hate timeshare salespeople. They need to get a real job.

Red October is right as IMHO in 99% of the cases resale is far and away the best way to go.

Our experiance in Las Vegas with Trendwest was very nice last October when we traded into the Las Vegas Marriott. We told the body snachter upfront that we were there to check out the resort for future trades, for the gift and and were not going to buy. We told the sales person the same thing.

We drew the groups leadwarm up warm up person after we sat down after his introduction warm up speech. I mentioned that I knew PA who was at that time running for a seat on the Trendwest board.

The sales rep opened up the Trend west magazine and there was Phillups Picture. We then had a present conversation about various timeshare subjects until the 90 mintes were up and then were gifted. He did make a low pressure effort to sell us but of course we did not buy.

The resort was nice. We did 5 other tours that week and covered most of our vacation costs.

The Marriot was nice but did not have a bathroom fan. We also stayed a couple of days at Our Cliffs Canyon to meet our week 42 renters.

Our one bedroom at 800 square feet at the Cliffs was slightly bigger than the Marriots one bedroom. The Marriot unit was of a nice size and a bit more elaborite than our Cliffs. But our Cliffs had the nicer heated outside pool and hot tubs.
