WorldMark West Yellowstone, YS National Park & Surrounding Area
We really wanted to go to Yellowstone this year with the kids. It sounds like a great place to spend a few weeks. We'd be driving from California, so it will really take a lot of planning (and vacation time) to get there and back. Maybe in 2009 or 2010!
Thanks for the great tips. The Worldmark sounds like it is well located!

It's a pretty good drive, but probably only about 20 hours total. If you and your family can tolerate many hours on end in the car, it can be done with a minimum of pain in 2 days with one overnight, probably in Utah (unless you're coming from Northern CA). If you have enough drivers, can push through the night, but not something I recommend. I have done it several times, but I was younger then. Most people I know here in the Rockies have driven to CA at least a couple times. It only makes sense that some Californians come back out here. Though not too many, please. We enjoy the open spaces and slower pace of life that still exists in much of the intermountain west.
Boca,
Sounds like you're having a great trip. You're in some of my favorite places in the world. Enjoy!!!

Well, we are in Northern California, so DH says we either drive through the Nevada desert, or go south through AZ and stop at a lot of cool places. My kids (and I) can't tolerate longer than 8 hours of driving a day, and we'd need at least two stops in there. There would be two drivers, but we won't drive through the night...too old, eyesight even with contacts is not perfect at night, too tired, etc. I've only been to Yellowstone once in my lifetime, so I am probably due for a visit!

Mapquest says that the trip from S.F. is about 14 hours to West Yellowstone, so might be doable in two days. Just have to figure out where in NV (or possibly southern ID) you're going to stay over. Of course, I don't know exactly where in Northern CA you live so might be a little different than this. I think you are due for a visit!! Have a great day!
We just returned from a Yellowstone trip Saturday night. Some of our highlights are.
Yellowstone Park
• Driving on the Beartooth Mountain Byway to Yellowstone. It boarders the North East entrance. If you have the times do it. It took us about 6 hours to drive the 70 miles.
• Rafting the Yellowstone River although I would do the Gallatin River next time.
I was told that the Beartooth Mountain drive is a must do too!
We will raft when we go next summer. Why would you pick the Gallatin River instead?? What company did you use for the raft trip you did take? Recommend them?
We choose the Flying Pig Rafting & Adventure Company in Gardiner, MT. The company has rafting on both Gallatin River and the Yellowstone River. We choose the Yellowstone River to raft for 2 reasons.
First my wife and I have never whitewater rafted before and didn't know what to expect with the rapids. The Yellowstone River has class 2 rapids with some class 3 rapids. The Gallatin River has class 3 rapids with some class 4 rapids. Rafting the Yellowstone was more of a float down the river with some rapids. The guide told us the reason for the of lack of rapids was because of the river was high. It was a good experience for our first time whitewater rafting.
The second reason we would do the Gallatin is when we drove home we took highway 191 to Interstate 90 to Bozeman. Highway 191 runs along the Gallatin River so we got to see the kinds of rapids and navigation required to raft the Gallatin River. We also watched some of the rafts on the river and it looked like it would have been more exciting.
We did a paddle and saddle through the Flying Pig Rafting & Adventure Company and would do so again. I tried to take some pictures when we were rafting but it was hard to get a good one as the raft was bouncing around so much. I got lots of pictures of the sky and the bottom of the raft.
I do have lots of pictures of Beartooth and Yellowstone. I will post some of them when I have gone through them.
