  • Is it worth converting Weeks to Points?

We own a floating week at Kona Hawaiian Resort, 2 bedroom, 2 bath unit. In speaking with Wyndham corporate sales, it would cost $2395 to transfer from a weeks to points system and would convert to 231,000 points. It would be beneficial for us to have the flexibility with points, so we're okay paying the exchange fee.

Here's the kicker, they said that we would need to make an minimum purchase of 63,000 points at $11,500 to perform this week-to-points conversion. Has anyone else experienced this? It seems like a total sales tactic to get me to make a purchase. How can I proceed with a conversion without purchasing additional points? Would it be better to buy my points on the resale market?

    Any information would be helpful.
    Thanks,
    Sandy

Sandy, I think it would. You can buy 231,000 points for $1 right now on ebay and save the $2300 to put toward maintenance fees. If you are patient you can find the right number of points at the right price for you.

Don't give up your weeks... I am not a point fan myself.

What don't you like about the points system that makes you prefer weeks? The points system seems more flexible.

          1. Purchase 63k from developer is not really helpful. There is a VIP level which is 300k. In your case, it is 69K more. With VIP, you can waive the House Keep Credit at least for now (allow you to do more short stay if you like), and get a little bit more guest certification and some discount in last min deal (for now, it can be changed though). So, if you really want to purchase from developer, you should buy at least 69k.

          2. the purchase money will give you 300k Wyndham package. Which at this moment, is close to zero if you try to sell through eBay. So, all the money you pay to developer is wasted.

          3. The corp does allow you to do just covert to point without any developer purchase at least 1 years ago, the cost is about $2,400. You have 69k less point as well as 69k less MF to pay.

          4. convert to point will add some club membership due on you. But with RCI coverted club due, it will not be that painful.

Point does more flexible than week. Week is much certain than points though.

economic wise, it does not make too much senses.

If you really want, try to negotiate with them to get 69k extra package under $6,000. It still not make too much economic sense, but with some add flexibility, at least you kind of get balanced.

You should also check if you own the fix unit more than 3 years, that they have some offer to convert by $1,000 back in 2008 for 1 year, since you apparently does not know that deal exists.

I would retain my week. This resort should always be a great trader.

Our timeshare just got transferred to us from my in-laws, who bless their hearts for giving it to us, didn't provide much information. Where/how do you trade units/weeks? Is RCI the best option? We're looking for a trade in Jan/Feb 2012 at Park City, Utah.

Thanks everyone for their responses! You provided clarity as the timeshare companies make everything as clear as mud.

Trading Places International gets quite a bit of Park City Utah and would be happy to take your KHR week in exchange.

                  Not worth the cost usually

The points system IS far more flexible. But the pricing to convert may not make it a good deal. You'd be better off picking up some Wyndham Points at resale (which go for as little as free lately) rather than paying to convert your existing week(s) to points. For original Wyndham resorts the remaining weeks based ownerships tend to be, but aren't all, the off times that didn't take advantage of the inexpensive conversion they offered many years ago but now are too costly to convert for the number of points you'd get. Or they are at a resort for a good fixed week use or unit or view that someone bought to use and now don't want to give that guaranteed spot up.

Either way there is little resale value to any Wyndham now days largely thanks to owner negative moves by Wyndham to devalue resales. The plan has worked all too well - now they are stuck trying to give value where there is none to overpriced Developer sales by using the bogus (and virtually worthless at today's prices) VIP. Eventually they will run out of uninformed buyers and they will have to work to rebuild the value of resales or get out of sales as few today will pay the outrageous prices they ask retail when they know as soon as the rescind period ends 95%+ of their purchase price is gone! THAT is a major hit in the pocketbook no matter how much you have/make.

I would ignore the offers to convert unless they do it for around $1000 (unheard of since the very early days of Wyndham Points). Sell what you have and get reslae points or add to your holdings with some resale points in addition to your fixed week(s).

Converting is the cheapest way to get VIP...if you want VIP, thats the only way i'd do it

Thanks for all the great info! I'll look into buying resale points and keeping our week at KHV. This is a bit of a tangent but...do you use only 1 exchange company or do you use more than one? Which one is better Trading Places or RCI?
