  • Old Town Alexandria

I plan to visit DC with the family at the beginning of April, 2010. I know someone at work who has Wyndham points and might reserve a week for me in exchange for one of my weeks. I was wondering if by the time the nonpriority reservation period opened (she does not own in Alexandria) is it likely that all rooms would be taken? It is during Cherry Blossom time. Also, how crowded will DC be that week, if anyone knows? More questions. If this direct exchange doesn't work out, do people think I should rent from an owner (I think it would be about $1600 based on ads for this year) or would a suites hotel like Embassy Suites be a better option, in terms of amenities, location, or whatever? TIA!

We stayed here several years ago through a rental from an owner. I don't remember it being that expensive, but again it was years ago.

Yes, that time of year DC will be crowded. That when we went since it was over Spring Break.

I don't know where the Embassy Suites are located, but my choice would be, if I couldn't get a direct exchange, would be to check the rates at Marriott Residence Inn, or something similar, that is close to the Metro. If that works out less than renting at the Old Town Alexandria, I'd go that route.

I don't own Wyndham so I can't speak from experience, but my understanding that getting Alexandria is extremely hard at any time of the year. I think that time period would probably be about one of the most difficult times to get in.

Old Town Alexandria is very hard to get during the busy seasons, especially during cherry blossom time in DC. To ensure that you get a unit at that specific time, your friend would need to make the reservation for you at exactly 10 months before your arrival date. I am going there for the Fourth of July. I made my reservations at 8:00am, exactly 10 months before. Those dates were all booked-up within less than a month. If you look at the availibilty, Old Town Alexandria is currently booked solid through the beginning of November 2009. And that's 8 months away!

I am an owner at OTA and the MFs are sky high, $1600 for a 2BR is not unreasonable. Spring, Summer, and Fall are all hard to get at OTA unless you luck up and stumble upon a cancellation. I have the 4th of July booked, too. And, I actually have what I consider a better alternative for any TS4Ms member that is interested and emails me.

Wyndham is opening a new resort this fall in DC. Hopefully that will free up some space.
