  • Getaway deals

Last year, II had some fabulous getaway deals that were dirt cheap. If anyone sees the same type of offer again this year, please post. I got two weeks last year for $159/week. Amazing - less than the cost of a night's stay at many places!

Our first actual week of timeshare more than 20 years ago was a $99 Bonus Vacation from RCI. Our only week to actually stay at Wastegate Vacation Villages, was an RCI Bonus Week, and were treated like crap, rather than like the owners we were. We only did one other Bonus Vacation.

You would think that with more than 120 exchanges, we would have done more bonus weeks.

Also, remembering because I just posted it elsewhere, several years ago I got Orlando Getaways opened for Orlando owners who also own elsewhere, since that was our case back then. Prior to that, if you owned in the Orlando area, you could not get Orlando area Getaways.

      Random II Getaway Deals

A couple of months back, II had similar specials, for only a few hundred each week. Make sure you're signed up for II's newsletter email to get the latest notifications.

            I've been told stuff like:

You're right about that. Just curious - what happens to the weeks that don't get sold? (there seem to be a lot of them) Wouldn't it make sense to lower the prices a bit and get some money, rather than none? Or is there some type of tax write-off that II can use if the weeks don't get sold?

That question has been around at least since we started timesharing more than 20 years ago.

It is Excess Inventory that opened the door for Cendant, and the mess today at RCI, which has been de-volving since 1996, when Cendant bought RCI from Christell DeHaan for $825 Million.

It was the offering of Excess Inventory to the public that tempted the greed of Cendant to begin renting out Spacebank deposits, since they could get more than an exchange fee.

It would be a good story for the TV program American Greed, to show how it ruined a pretty-much good thing.

I understand, from a business perspective, that it makes more sense to try to get more money from renters than to offer units for the exchange fee. Overall, II is making at least three or more times on a Getaway than they are for the exchange fees. However, if profit is the real motivation behind the get-aways, and they aren't being taken, II loses out twice - once because they have taken inventory away from potential exchanges (even though a small profit) and twice because the get-away doesn't sell either. That's not greed - it's plain STUPID business dealings. Ultimately, they chase away both exchangers and renters.

Some of us have been saying for more than ten years that it is a conflict for an exchange company to also be a rental company. It still is.

RCI gives that a try every now and then:
