  • II Exchange Newbie

I've owned a timeshare in New Smyrna Beach for a few years now and this year we are thinking of joining II so that we can try a different location.

My timeshare is an annual float (1-52) 2BR and trades with II.

Before I join II and try to exchange, I was hoping for some advice and guidance.

    1) Since I have a floating week, how would I do an exchange? Do I just call up my resort and book a high demand week? (Daytona area seems to be 9,14,23-29 highest) Or do I contact II first and find out what they want/need?

    2) We would like to try a resort on the Florida Gulf Coast (middle to southern area) this year. The travel dates are not flexible, August 5th-11th, as we arrange this around a relatives vacation. Is it unikely we can get a trade for the Gulf on a specific week? I would hate to not be able to find an alternative resort and miss our vacation this year.

    3) In looking through the II resort list I see a number of resorts either listed as limited trades or new member resort. Does this mean my chances are even more limited in getting an exchange?

    4) Has anyone traded for a Florida Gulf Coast resort and can make a recommendation for/against a resort? We are looking for a 2BR on the beach.

    Thanks for any info provided.

    Hi, and welcome to TS4M's!

I will try and answer your questions the best that I can. I do not own a week in Florida, but can give you some general info. Hopefully someone with a little more personal experience will chime in.

II does list the most desirable weeks in Smyrna Beach as week 9, 14, and 23 through 29....... If it where my week, I think my first preference would be week 14, spring break.

The first thing that you would do is to call your resort, and book week 14, or whatever week you prefer. Once you have your week secured, you need to have that week deposited into II. You can join II right after you secure your week, if you'd like. I am not familiar with your week, but if you do not have the ability to deposit your week into II online, then have your resort deposit the week for you.

I've never attempted to trade into the Gulf Coast of Florida, but I can tell you that I do not see many 2 bedroom, beachfront showing up when doing online searches. My opinion is that it is a difficult trade, and would most likely need a very strong trader to acquire a trade through II. However, because you would like to travel in August, 5-11, which is a low demand week, your odds of getting an exchange are greatly increased.

Limited trades means that there are a limited number of deposits being made into II, so your chances of getting one of them is not high.

New member resort means that the resort is new to II, but that should have no bearing on trading into the resort.

You can place a "request first" with II, and then wait to see of they can get you the week. If they cannot, you would get your week back. I'm not sure if that would help you tho, since you would need to book a week other than the date that you are locked into?

    Good luck!

Thank you for your quick and informative repsonse.

It sounds like my best bet is to book week 14 at my home resort if I decide the risk is worth it. I am a little confused about that though.

Timeshare calendars show week 14 as:
      Fri-Fri = April 6th-13th
      Sa-Sa = April 7th -14th
      Su-Su = April 1st-8th

Since my resort is Sunday checkin I would be booking a week earlier than the Friday/Saturday checkin if I booked week 14. How does this impact things with II? Should I be booking week 15 instead?

      Thanks again.

Hmmmm, I think Spring break is in March? Bike week which is a very popular week is March 9-18, in 2012. I always thought that Spring Break was the first & second week in March, but I'm not 100%.

Looks like week 14 in 2012 is Easter Week. Easter falls on April 8th in 2012. Easter week would also be a good week, but you don't want to check-in, or out on Easter Sunday. So, having only Sunday check-in date is not so good.

Maybe you can google "Spring Break in Daytona," or google "events" taking place in Daytona during "Spring Break," to get some actual dates?

You know what, it's probably week 9 that is Spring Break, not week 14. However, that could change a bit from year to year, so it would be to get actual dates.

We really could use a Florida expert on this thread! Sorry!

Ah yes it looks like typically week 9 is biker week. BUT, this year it seems it's all pushed back 1 week to March 9th-18th, which would be my week 11.

If I call II will they tell me what weeks they want? Or is the trade solely dependent on if they book my week or not?

I'm thinking that week 10 in 2012 is a very good week.....It should cover both bike week & Spring Break.

Btw, are you depositing 2012 or 2013?

You might ask them if any weeks qualify for a bonus week. Most deposits are not accepted until the resort's maintenance fees are paid (may be a prerequisite to book a week from the resort as well).

My fees are paid so I figured I'd give II a call. They weren't able to tell me which week would get me a bonus week. They said the only way is to join, then it would show up in my account which week to deposit to get the bonus. Not sure if that was a line or not, but I'm going to go ahead and join and see what happens.

                  Thanks

I signed up and did a search for a trade. As you say above not much is showing up. In your experience do things tend to show up as the year moves along or are people booking a year in advance and I won't see much change before August?

It is doubtful that what you want will just "show up" online. Your best bet would be to put in an ongoing search - those get matched against incoming inventory first. If the date of the week you are depositing falls AFTER the August date that you want, you can place a "request first" search so you only have to give II your week if they find the match you want. If your deposit falls prior to the dates you want, you'd have to deposit it first, place an ongoing search, and hope for the best.

Also, if you are depositing a 2012 week, you best not wait too long. I believe (someone please jump in) that there is some disadvantage to depositing less than 60 days out, and further dilution at 30 days.

We own a floating New Smyrna week at Coconut Palms II.

I typicially either book week 7 or 9 which falls into either Daytona 500 week or Bike week and have had great trading power with each of those weeks.

II has been giving bonus weeks - they did back in September when I deposited my 2012 week with them. But....a quick look in my account and I don't see that offer anymore.

Thanks for that info, that's my resort as well. Where would I look in my II account to see if the bonus week offer is there? I haven't deposited anything yet.

I did get some Accomodation Certificate, but it appears mostly for off-season travel to various destinations.
