  • DVC exchanges - why people think they are difficult.

There are often posts on this forum asking if a DVC trade is possible.

When I started TSing 7 years ago, DVC exchanges were few and far between. There were only a few DVC resorts and people would excitedly post about these infrequent exchanges.

Now there are 6 in Orlando with the 7th being built by the Contemporary resort. There will soon be a DVC in California and of course they have the properties in Vero Beach and Hilton Head.
And all these years Disney has been selling points and more points to their loyal owners - I know people who own 500 points, 800 points and even 1,000 points - and I am sure there are people who own many more!
In this same time frame, (10-15 years) the people who originally bought from Disney are getting older as are their children. Gradually, they don't need as big a unit or visit as frequently as they once did. They don't want to sell their points as their family situation will more then likely change again - grandchildren! and they want their points to book those bigger units and longer vacations again.

So what are they doing with their points???
Depositing them into Interval International !!!

They want to go elsewhere and try different locations just like everyone else.

If you look at our exchange op board - every day has a listing of DVC resorts - so many and so often that ArtsieAng - The Queen - doesn't always post them. And remember that the weeks u see online are the leftovers - the weeks no one has a request in for.

What kind of week do u need to 'see' DVC - a good quality, good season resort. You don't need a Premiere resort GOLD - a Select SILVER and even some 'standard resorts in high/red/platinum season will allow u to see DVC.

And if you really want one, put in an ongoing request 12 months before you want to go - if you have the 'power', you will get your trade.

Thank you for posting this insight. I must admit that I am one who has always wondered what it takes to get such an exchange.

Out of all that I own, I believe the only resorts which exchange with II are:

Tamarack WI Dells (used to be Peppertree) week 27

Sands of Kahana floating 2BR Maui

    Quarter House- 1BR week 10 and 2BR week 1

The Dells and Maui rent too well to exchange, but I often wonder if NOLA will pull DVC. Is an II membership worth it to give it a try?

Quarter House week 10 - yup and week 1 yup - this is an II Premier (gold) resort - the only II resort with that designation in NOLA. I bet they would even give you an Accommodation Cert for the week 10 and maybe the week 1.
So you would get 2 DVC weeks

Pretty sure Sands of K would, too.

Don't know the quality level of the Dells but summer should do the trick. Just checked - Select(silver) rating - I would say "You're going to Disney World!"

The beauty of II is that when u join, you add ALL your ownerships to the account at once and then u can search online without depositing - VERY different then RCI. Also, before you join, you can find out if they offer an AC for your weeks.
So u can actually see what ALL your ownerships will pull in II.

Yippee! I can't even count how many times we've done Orlando, but never slept on Disney property. I have only envied from afar. Not that I'm such a big fan of the mouse, rather Orlando is such a win/win location with availability, airfare, activities, extended family, etc.

My II ignorance is embarrassing for a ts veteran. How fun it will be to have another "wishbook" to browse. When my siblings and I were younger, we would randomly open the RCI book to pick our next daydream destination, much like spinning a globe and stopping it with your finger.

          It's time to call II.

Jana, a few people have posted they have recently received a 2 year for the price of one offer - why not PM them and see if you can get the offer, too.
Or call II and say "I am responding to the 2 for 1 offer" - all they can say is no.

Yes, that is a good point - they MAKE it seem as if it is difficult - but there is definitely increased availability due to the growing number of resorts/rooms.

What if you own at a resort that is located close to Disney property and not affliated with II?

If it is not affiliated with II, you can't exchange into DVC except maybe through an independent (which I suspect is unlikely).

One more note on II--in addition to request-first, you can also cancel a membership and get a pro-rated refund for any wholly unused months. So, if anyone is wonder if their II-affiliated resort can "see" Disney, it's pretty cheap to find out. If it doesn't, you can always cancel, and be out just a few dollars.

and if you mean 'close' as in Orlando - some resort groups have a regional block regarding trading back into that area so you would probably not be able to get DVC.

Either way, check with your resort, some are affiliated with II and RCI.

Thanks Pat, good advice as usual. I guess being 5 minutes from Animal Kingdom would qualify for the regional block.

Excellent advice as with II you can search using your week before depositing - very UN-RCI-like!
