Trying for DVC in May 2009?

Hello Tuggers... Now with my exchange for November set it's time to look foward to plan the next trip in May.

We can't put in an ongoing request until January 2009. At that time the request will be for the last week in May. I usually see a lot of units come up in May.

What do you think my chances of getting a 2 bedroom that week? Do you think I have any chance besides at OKW or SSR? I would like to stay at one of the other three resorts if possible.

I am depositing a 2 bedroom unit which does see DVC 2 bedrooms when they come up even outside of Flex window.

Any advice is welcome we are still new at this....I saw a lot of 2 bedroom units come up for September this year was wondering what the last week May brings. I saw a studio come up today for the last week in May.

2BR late May? Very doable. I saw several for 08.
Not in OKW/SSR? Less so---I don't recall seeing one in the leftovers.

Thanks... I am wondering about putting in an ongoing request in for the other 3 first ... and then going with SSR or OKW if the others don't come through.. I know you remember what happened to me this past summer for our dates of June 13th. shut out of DVC all together. I don't want that to happen again.. However since we are staying in SSR in November would like something different. How long do you think I should wait for a 2 bedroom at the other 3 before changing to SSR.

I think it is up to you. If you would rather not go than stay in SSR or OKW, leave 'em off. Otherwise, as you are looking for a 2BR, I'd put at least OKW in the mix.

If you could do a 1BR, I'd be more optimistic about just the three.

If you want to keep on top of it with daily searches, and have two units that can look, list one with all five, and the other with just the three. Then, if you hit OKW/SSR first, let the other one roll and try to retrade if it hits too. Note that most ACs are good for May in Orlando, so an AC would work.

Been watching DVC online deposits and sightings almost daily (keeping one list of sightings/day) since late April. Note that these are only the "leftovers," spotted online, which were not taken first by the ongoing searches. Here are the number of times that a 2BR has been noted in these (just under) 3 months:

Beach Club Villas - none
BoardWalk Villas - 1, spotted under 4 months out
Villas at Wilderness Lodge - 1, spotted under 3 months out
Old Key West - 24 (many were duplicates), spotted under 8 mo to under 1 mo - most bet 5-3 months out
Saratoga Springs - 39 (many were duplicates), spotted under 7 mo to under 1 mo - most bet 5-2 months out

Soooo, go ahead and place your search request for just the three you want the most to try and catch it with the computer match. But you may want to add the two big resorts by 3+ months out (Feb, for May). If you are seeking Memorial Day week and only that week, I'd be inclined to just list them all from at least 5 months out, around the New Year. Like Brian mentioned, I'd also consider dropping the minimum unit size to a 1BR by 4 months out, if that unit size would work. The question is really what matters more to you and how much more... staying in your first choice resorts or staying onsite.

I have an ongoing search for the BCV, the BWV or the VWL in a one bdrm. I am searching with a Foxrun two bdrm. It is for my granddaughter's honeymoon for May 3-10, 2009. I really hope it shows up. I reserved a one bdrm BCV for May 3-8 using my DVC points. I cannot give her a weekend due to the high points. I hope something shows up for her.

Please let me know if this shows up for you Icydog I will also be using a 2 bedroom to get an exchange hopefully into DVC but cannot deposit until January. I know you have been waiting already for awhile hopefully soon it will match for you.

Icydog ~ I just went and checked II and there is a studio for SSR for May. Hopefully your dates will match soon and we will see more May showing up.

lisa p has the right idea, tracking availability and using it as a guide for future trades.

many times ive seen resorts that i had ongoing searches for appear on interval. i would not rely soley on an ongoing search.

I check in on the DVC available at II every time I go online... and if I am doing any computer work at all, several times a day. I have done this for a few years now, off and on. The last month or so I have checked daily, at least 2xs a day...
I have seen DVO, DSS, DWL, DBW show up 2 times with multi units, at each 2 times in the last month. It was early, early in the morning, after 1am, but befor 5am... I was awake, online, and checked on a fluke! Of course within about 20 min or a 1/2 hour most were gone and it was down to 1 or 2 DVC resorts.
I just ran a check with II, and they have 6 units at DSS, Sar.Springs, check in from Aug 24 to Sept 21... DVO, Old Key West has one Aug 24 (2 bed), and one Nov 16....DWL has on Aug 23 ..
I check for a 2 or 3 bed, Grand Villa all the time. Got one once, a few years ago... it was a glitch with II, and a "ghost" unit. I had the confirmation and cert in hand, but when I called to double check it disapeared. It happened again, the next year. However last year we got in to Old Key West with a 2 bed room for the last weekend of May to June? and then in Sept we got into Wilderness Lodge Villas, 2 bedroom, mid Sept.
I have had the best luck on weekend early morning, or on a Tues. No idea why! and I would bet my choclate that it is dumb luck.
I did get the 2bed at Old Key West my self on line, and I placed a request with Sunterra/DRI's guy that used to track requests. I don't know if DRI still does that, or if what ever TS you have does that. I requested the week in Sept after the May trip, and had it in less then 5 weeks. Who ever was doing DRI requests for II exchanges last year,(a nice guy, sorry can't remember his name), was really on top of it.
I have never tried to Short stay into DVC, I was told that they would be available, but that has not shown up on II any times I have been checking.
