  • Using A Credit In Your Account

RCI does not allow you to use an existing credit in your account for online transactions. I have batted that problem around with them since it began . . . that would be 12 years now.

Rather than figuring out a way to let you do that, they prefer to make you call in in order to use existing credits.

Then, when they decided to charge $25 more for exchanges through a Guide, that created another problem in that it forces you to waste credit, say Member Dollars earned via the RCI Elite Rewards credit card. So, they decided to let you have exchanges for the same as the online fee if you have to call in because you want to use the credit. (Some Guides do not seem to know that and tell you you have to pay the higher fee, period.)

The problem is that they will not allow Guides to discount an exchange fee to the online rate, so they have to give you another credit ($25), which, of course, you will have to call in to use. They do that by giving you a $25 coupon. (By the way, you can see coupons when you check your account online but you cannot see other credits, like Member Dollars.)

I have received from Feedback various versions of how Guides are supposed to handle this. As of my last transaction, last week, I accepted the fact that I will have to perpetually have a $25 coupon carry forward for my next transaction, have the Guide use it, and then issue another $25 coupon to carry forward.

However, this just arrived, the version du jour, of how Guides should handle this:

If you have to call in, they will use your member dollars, plus post a coupon for $25 which the system will use (both) for that transaction. Therefore, you will only pay $164.

That is not how it worked last week.

Wouldn't it be easier just to let you use existing credit for online transactions?

Whenever I've had a "credit" I've called and asked them to refund the fee to me on my credit card.

But they won't do that with the "coupons" that they give you now, for say - cancelations that were "insured..." I ran into this just last week, but it didn't occur to me to ask for the $25 back.

Maybe I will call now just to amuse myself... it's been a tough day...

        I agree.

The last time I got stuck with a coupon, I asked them to refund it to my credit card account and they did.

Still, wouldn't it be easier to just let us use credits for online transactions?

It might be easier, but personally I'd rather have the credit/money back in my possession.

Well they gave me a $25 coupon, but refused to refund my credit card. I was told that from now on when using a coupon, I should ask for Web Services, because they have The Power to charge the lower rate when you have a coupon. We'll see...

In the meantime, found a glitch in their system (shock and awe) - my account shows a recent confirmation as having "Vacation Protection," but it doesn't really have it... and of course I have no actual confirmation of what I was charged by RCI (heaven forbid) so have no idea if they charged me for the phantom insurance or not.

Wouldn't the charge show on your credit card statement?

Yeah, they sent me that route once. When I went to Web Services, the discussion seemed familiar, and it turned out I was just talking to a Guide. He said that's what happens when you ask for Web Services.

I'm not sure what the Guide did last week because when I modified an ongoing search he set up for the wrong area, it said, "You have not paid for the Guest Certificate."

Eventually. But I might not catch a mistake in time to do much about it. And if I have a lot of RCI transactions, it is not easy to decipher one from the other - why can't they just send a confirming email with the amount charged, right away, so I can check to see if it's correct? (rhetorical...)

If you confirm an exchange, and then cancel it the next day, what's the label on the credit? I'd be surprised if it was still tagged as a coupon rather than just a generic credit (which can be refunded).

If you cancel within 24 hours you get everything refunded. And I think the insurance is cancelable/refundable for longer than that. You also have 30 days from confirmation to buy the insurance, so you don't have to do it right away. I assume there are exceptions depending on how close to checkin you book.

iii.If a Member confirms an Exchange twenty (20) or less days prior to the check-in date, the Member shall not be entitled to any refund of the Exchange fee paid regardless of when the cancellation occurs.

A couple weeks ago I completed an exchange and tried to get the $25 discount while using my credit balance and wasn't able to. I emailed RCI and this is the response I got:

"Member Reward Dollars cannot be utilized when completing online
reservations. If you wish to use them toward reservations, the
confirmations must be completed by a Vacation Guide. Since this is the
case, the exchange fee pricing for the call center would be applicable."

Is there a secret handshake I need to know to get the coupon?

There are as many answers as there are Guides and Feedback people.

Yes, you need the secret word. For me it is the name of the person you have developed somewhat of a relationship with, even though that is sometimes rocky for them.

I have had someone like that for several years, since I sent them that 100 and some page report to support a trading power glitch.

If you like my answer better, feel free to use it:

                              Hello,

Thank you for your e-mail. If you have to call in, they will use your member dollars, plus post a coupon for $25 which the system will use (both) for that transaction. Therefore, you will only pay $164. Please fee free to confirm this with the agent as that is what they are "supposed" to be doing in that case.

We hope this information is helpful.

Whatever it means, what my account shows online after starting an ongoing search is a $64 Exchange Credit and a $25 Coupon. That sounds to me like it is not fully paid for. Member Dollars do not appear online, so I can't tell if he actually used them. Anyway you cut it, that can't be right.

Wasn't there a time recently when you could start a search without having to pay?
