  • Newbie question on trading with RCI.

OK, I will try and keep this brief, I have 2 blue week studios deposited with RCI, they came from Wyndham points, I can not see them on line, I have to call to get avaiblity. My questions

    1) Can I combine these weeks to get a larger unit, say take the 2 weeks and trade for one week in a 2 bedroom?

    2) if so, will I have to pay 2 transfer fees?

    3) Do I have to use them for a week? Can I trade the week for say a 3 day weekend? Could I trade both for a really nice 3 or 4 day weekend?

I have never done the RCI thing, and not sure I will again, but when I bought a resale contract at the end of the year last year, it had 56k points still sitting for 2009 and as it was december, I didn't have much of a choice. Let me know your thoughts. Thanks!

I don't believe there is any mechanism to exchange 2 weeks for one, I've never heard of it. Saying that if you haven't used RCI before there is sometimes no rhyme or reason as to the trades and you could get a really good exchange (usually off season) for your studios.
You pay the exchange fee by the week.
I've never heard of trying to exchange weeks into days, you would need to have an RCI Points account to do that, as far as I'm aware.

You can't combine them into one exchange, but I wouldn't recommend it even if you could. Just because you only have studios doesn't mean you can't trade up into a larger unit with each week you have deposited. I just got back from a stay in a lovely 3 bedroom/3 bath/3 story townhome in a popular Colorado ski area (President's week even) that I traded into with a 28k blue studio. I made the exchange a week before check-in, not a problem because the resort is <100 miles away.

With few exceptions, RCI weeks trade for full weeks (there are some 5-day trades but they are rare). However, no one will make you stay the full week. If you are only spending 28k on the trade you can afford to burn a few days. For example, so we only used the townhome mentioned above for a 4-day holiday weekend. (My husband is time-off challenged -- wish we could have stayed longer!!!)

The biggest hassle you face in using your deposits is that you have to call in to use them. Personally, I would try to get a visible deposit with your 2010 points so you can search online. If you see something you like you can put it on hold. If you decide you want to make the trade, call RCI and ask if one of your lesser weeks can do the job instead. Works for me!

Also, once you reach a certain number of posts (or contribute enough $$ to this site) you will be able to see the RCI exchange opportunities section. There you can see what trades others have found recently, which can give you a heads up on when a call to RCI might be worthwhile. You can even put in a sightings request, although nothing beats being able to to your own online searches.

      Good luck!

        Assuming you're referring to points

        1. You own 56000 points - you can trade 56000 points (it's like a currency)
        2. Nope (as long as it's the same unit type for the duration of your stay)
        3. You can do short breaks in many of the US resorts, however the rest of the world tends to be on a weekly basis

        Hope that helps

EOY 2008 I had Wyndham deposit all our points into RCI. EOY 2009 we did likewise.

We do the 28k and call the Wyndham rep at 1-800-572-0931 to see what is available. If you plan ahead they can put in Searches for you.

Just now I asked for 2-weeks each on Kauai, Maui and Big Island from 26 March through 7 May. Have 5 Holds while we decide and 2 weeks on search.

Try not to fret too much about it. There's not much availability sometimes, but they do work with you with what there is.

Don't restrict yourself to any particular size unit. If you call within a month or two of when you wish to occupy, you are at the mercy of recent cancellations, usually. Call each day till you find what you can go with.

            Welcome to the club,

            Robert
