  • Does RCI offer this for free?....Wyndham vacations does...

There is a 100% refund given if you cancel your rental with Wyndham 3 days or more BEFORE check in:

    details are HERE

Does RCI let its members have such privileges for FREE? I don't think so, but you can add an insurance policy for $$$ to your exchange, and that is on top of your RCI fees for membership and for the exchange, and housekeeping or what else you pay......

No. Sometimes renter won. O.K. maybe a lot of time.

On the other hand, you can just rent from RCI also. They did not exclude RCI members from renting.

Right. So, the question is: do the (usually) higher prices at Wyn E-V make up for the flexibility in cancel terms?

Depends on how firm your plans are.

When doing your cost analysis, add your maintenance fees, exchange fee, housekeeping fee (if it applies) and your insurance fee....

Sure. In this case, though, I'm specifically comparing rental prices.

I'll also sometimes use an exchange even though it is a few dollars more, because I don't have a ready use for that week otherwise. It's no good "saving" a week if you have to take a trip you didn't really want to take just to burn it later. I don't need each and every week to be the lowest possible cost. I just want to make sure that my overall per-night costs are still low enough that I'm comfortable with the process. My exchanges are usually significantly lower in cost than the comparable RCI rental. In fact, I think I've only had one exchange that was higher, and it wasn't higher by very much, so I'm still well in the black.

Sure, I usually add the cost of inconvenient (like exchange has to be 7 nights, renting can be few nights, and some other options will allow you check in at early time and check out at late time). But so far I have not purchase insurance. Maybe when I get old and start falling apart, I will add them. I seldom need to worry about HK.

I remember a while ago, you can find hotel stay for year around with like $23 per night. So I don't really compare cost to T. I certainly believe at certain level, you will have to pay certain amount. A high quality hotel can not survive running in low budget, no matter how great the CEO is. From time to time, if I have to be in that level, I can find cheap way to reduce the amount, but those will never be lower than if I am willing to take maybe 1 or 2 level down (like if you want to stay in beach front at summer, you may find some cheap way to get in most of the time, but in the long run, if you just simple pick some place few steps from beach and/or not beach time, you will easily save much more with same or less effort). It has to depend on your overall budget.

With different timing (like bad economic time), you can get in high quality hotel with low price than most time it will charge, although may not mean you should take that. If it is not convenient to you, it is painful just to take vacation because something is cheap. But if you can enjoy it, you certain should take full advantage of it.

            I am kind of self-centered.

So far, the cost and the stuff I received for return, I believe is very fair. And if I look at rental and ownership, I still has very reasonable ownership usage and cost. But life will bring you different opportunities, so you should not tie all your vacations to TS ownership only, unless that is the only way you want your life be.
