It was Grand Sirenis, that they cancelled.

I looked at the Dorado resorts, because friends go there all the time, but there are only 2 people to a room, and there are 5 of us. And I had 2 important reasons for this trip, first was my son. He has not been able to go on a winter vacation with us for 4 years now due to hockey ( and we really have a great time together as a family on these trips, special memories for me) and it looks like he will be moving to the States to play hockey next year, so this might be a last chance to take him on a trip like this as a kid. I wanted a place that was all inclusive, because he loves to eat, and he needs to eat a lot. I also wanted a place that had a lot of other kids his age around, because he is a big quiet homebody, and needs a chance to have some fun.

Secondly I was looking for a safe accessable beach for my mother in law. She has severe Reumatoid arthritis, and there is something about soaking in the ocean that just makes her feel great.

I was also looking for a place that was big but not too big. My mother in law is bringing her boyfriend ( my father in law passed away a few years ago, and as much as he makes my mom in law very happy, I thought it would be best if he and my husband were not around each other 24/7.

And I love to snorkel, and Grand Sirenis had that, but I will give that up if I can find a resort to fit my other criteria.

But the place also had to be something we could afford, so as not to put undo stress on my poor husband. Sirens met all of that criteria for me!

Thanks so much for all of the suggestions, I will see what RCI says about some of them.

By the way I finally go to talk to my guy at RCI this morning, and they actually admitted that it was an overbooking situation, and they seem a lot more concilitory ( sorry i can speak, but i cant spell) It feels better not being lied to at least.

Hi Laurie, thanks for the answer, it is not what i wanted to hear, but it is what I expected. I tried looking up travellers rights, and i did find very clear statement of rights in the UK, but nothing from anywhere else. I have a friend who is an executive in the airline industry looking to see what she can find for me. I am just a fair person, i treat others fairly, and I expect to be treated fairly. I am dissapointed A LOT!

In addition to alternative accommodations for your trip, they should give you a "supervisor week" for your trouble. This is an extra week that will trade for almost anything....you still have to pay the exchange fee and you can't book them online.

This is not the first time we've heard of overbooking at Mexican resorts through RCI. I'm so sorry to hear this and I really hope you are able to come up with a way to accommodate your family and have a nice trip. You certainly need a vacation after all this!

Sorry to hear about this such disappointing situation.

There are soooooooo many resorts in the Riviera Maya area, I can't imagine that they can't do better for you.

If they can't and you are willing to go non-AI, I highly recommend the Royal resorts. I like the resort on the Bay side as it is a much easier entry into the ocean with the MIL. My Mom who also has RA pretty badly was able to get into the ocean here and it doesn't have waves like the Atlantic side does so she wasn't worried about falling and she can also steady herself on the dock as the water is shallow for a few hundred feet out.

The Royal Cancun or the Club International de Cancun as it's also know as is the resort I'm talking about. Because it is their oldest resort the prices are usually cheaper and you can get a beachfront townhouse where she could just walk out the door and be on the beach. The pools are very nice also and they have some days when they give you free tacos and snacks for the owners. I'm not an owner but no one asked for ID. You can also resort hop to the other Royals as a guest and they assign you a personal concierge that will help make your stay memorable. Your son can do sailing lessons for free at the resort and take a shot at sailing on his own. This location is also close to downtown so you can hit Wal-Mart and stock the fridge. They've got lots of restaurants also nearby and also in the resort.

Unfortunately Royal resorts is not part of RCI, only II. Don't know if you have an II account and probably there isn't much there anyway but You can rent directly from the resort fairly reasonable and of course if you are willing to do their TS tour which is pretty low key (think Marriott tours or even DVC tours) they'll cut you a deal, I'm sure.

            Check them out here:

Royal Resorts, The best vacation ownership in Cancun

Good luck to you and I hope it all works out.
Please come back and let us know how it worked out for you.

Even if you have to pay for all your food instead of AI, you will still end up spending less money. You can sit at the pool and order food and drinks. You can have everything charged to your room so the in-laws won't even know what it is costing. Ask about the Royal Sands, Royal Mayan & Royal Islander. All nice resorts on the beach. They all have restaurants too.

As a Sea Garden owner, you can trade back into the Mayan resorts anytime you want. You just need to call the special Mayan owners phone # at RCI. If you need the #, you can send me a PM.

thanks for the advice, I am keeping all options open at this point. I am sure you are right about the non all inclusive being cheaper, and as a couple that is always what we do, but for some reason AI just seemed so relaxing for this trip.

Still waiting to hear what my fate is going to be!

Still no place to go, and we leave in under a week. I cant believe that they expect me to wait all weekend for an answer. I am looking for other hotels on my own now, but there is not a lot left that meet all of my criteria.

Canceling a Confirmation was the first overt problem we had with RCI. That was more than 10 years ago and we had been owners/members for more than 10 years.

Prior to that the disappointments had just been the lies everyone is told and the state of disinformation they seem to delight in keeping people in.

In our case the Guide (VC) told us that if she confirmed the exchange, then she got it cleared (there had been a 1-in-4 question). We got the Exchange Confirmation, so I thought that was that.

Then we got the cancelation. Since it was the only RCI resort in the state, we had no option. RCI blamed it on the resort and the resort manager blamed it on their RCI rep, saying the rep actually called specifically about our exchange and pushed them to cancel it.

I went back and forth with the ^#&@& RCI assigned to take care of me. The last words she spoke to me were, "We have a legal department for people like you." They still do, probably a whole lot bigger.

But, it led to good, eventually.

It's a bitch and someone/agency ought to do something about it.

AHHH JLB you can relate! my exchange was a perfectly normal exchange and I had the mailed to me version of the confirmations in my hot little hands, but that did not seem to matter. At first they tried to tell me that the resort had closed some rooms for renovations, I told the one woman I was talking to that they were lying to me and I did not like it. Boy did she get mad! The next day my guy working on my case to me admits that it was an overbooking situation, and they claim to be working hard on it for me, but so far no results.

Itchy feet, we are arriving in Cancun ( but hoping to stay in the Mayan Riviera) on March 27 to Apr 3

RCI and the affiliates being different legal entities has been a convenient way of passing/ducking the buck as long as I go back. In our case RCI blamed the affiliate and the resort manager said the RCI rep specifically called him/them on our exchange, and asked him to go back and check their records, after the resort had confirmed us.

Does anyone really believe they are working in a void, separate from each other?

From that experience I learned about the various points trading restrictions can be enforced . . . originally, at both RCI and the affiliate, and as late as when they are working up checkins for each week. That started a thread on another internet forum, the question being whether anyone had been/could be denied a confirmation as late as check-in. Bootleg, a supposed RCI employee, said it could never happen, but a lady reported during that thread that she got canceled Tuesday of check-in week.

In our case, a marketing/management company had been called in to revive a resort that had had financial difficulties. They had cleared an empty duplex unit being used for storage and were marketing those two units. The 1-in-4, of course, was purely, openly to get fresh meat, not because of limited availability. The resort was always 1/2 full, m/l, when we were there.

Since Cendant had bought out Ms. DeHaan, I suggested someone try to find us hotel/motel accomodations.

A year later the 1-in-4 rule was gone, as was the marketing company.

                            Hmmmmm!?

It is disappointing that customers are still dealing with the same problems as in the old days, in addition to the new era problems.

But, like I said, I made lemons with the lemonade, and good came from it, eventually.

& I am still here, timesharing, 11 years later, and reporting on the good, the bad, & the . . . .
