  • RCI cancelation policy with insurance under new system?

I know that if I pay the "vacation protection," I will get a credit in the amount of the exchange fee good for six months, and get my deposit back with its initial trading power.

BUT - does anyone know what happens if I book a week using only a portion my TPUs for one deposit and then cancel? I know I will get the TPUs back, but will they be added back to my initial deposit, or will they be credited in a separate line item that I would then need to combine if I wanted to book something of higher TPU cost than the week I cancel?

I will try RCI if nobody here has done this yet, but I was not impressed with the VGs knowledge of the new system a few weeks ago and would like to avoid being misinformed.

I asked this. Here is the question I emailed to feedback@rci

I have a question about Vacation Protection and how it relates to Deposit Trading Power/Deposit Credits.

    The Vacation Protection policy says:

"If you have purchased Vacation Protection, upon cancellation of your RCI exchange vacation, you will receive back the Deposit Trading Power you received for your deposited week."

However, if the exchange required a trading power value *less than* the deposited week, the remaining trading power will be listed as a separate credit in my account. If I purchase Vacation Protection for that exchange, and later cancel it, will the two trading power values be re-combined automatically, preserving the Trading Power of the original deposit, or would I have to pay the $99 combine fee to do so?
    And here was the response:

    Thank you for your e-mail.

If you have to cancel a reservation that has Vacation Protection attached to it, the original Deposit Trading Power of the week that was used to confirm the unit originally is restored. Any Deposit Credits will be removed and your week will again be listed at its original Deposit Trading Power. You would not incur any additional fees for this process.
I don't know what would happen if you've used (a portion of) the Deposit Credits in the time between the original confirmation and the cancellation. Presumably, anything not yet used would be re-combined, but anything used would remain committed.

In general, I have found that sending email for these sorts of questions is better than calling; they can take their time to answer (this one took about a week), and hopefully that means the answer is better than a Guide's best guess as to what might happen.

And this is also a Consumer friendly GOOD answer.
Obviously if u have spent or combined the points with something else, it would remain as is but it is good to see it in writing.

Thanks for posting. I agree that emailing customer service is better than calling. I had noticed their response time was lagging after the latest "enhancement," and I needed an answer today. I also remember a few of us here getting conflicting email answers about the Manhattan Club 1 in 4 when it was first instituted, so I'm still a bit leery.

Right. Nothing says that this is actually what will happen. But, having people report their experiences isn't any better, because, as always, Mileage Varies. ;-)

True true. That's why I was hoping to find someone who had actually tested the system

I think I'll confirm today and maybe cancel tomorrow while I mull further. Thanks again for posting your email and response.

But even someone who had tested the system won't really tell you what you need to know because that was Then, and this is Now...it's always a roll of the dice.

well I blew it and lost the week in the meantime. Probably wasn't meant to be. I'll try again with something else soon enough and hope I don't have to test the cancelation policy.

I did this in mid-December. I confirmed an exchange and then cancelled it within the 24 hour grace period. It was immediately reunited with it's change and appeared as if I had never done the confirmed exchange at all.

I did it simply to see what would happen

                      However...

If you have an ongoing search with the balance of your TPU credit, it will need to be canceled and restarted in order to combine back to original TPU upon cancelation...

This is an interesting thought. Under certain circumstances a person wants to split their TPUs into smaller bits. This may be a way to do it. I am not in a position to try this out now but am going to give this a test run when I am. Thanks for putting the thought into my head!
