  • Cottage owners in UK figure out how to work the new RCI system

RCI Europe members can see lots of inventory in cottages that have been deposited for exchange for November and early December in the UK, with some in Ireland and France.

    see http://www.timeshareforums.com/forum...d-bargain.html

This is absolute low season in the UK with the short days that time of year, as well as the weather. There is a glut that RCI will never find takers for, esprecially at the points lite they are asking, generally in the teens with some in the low 20's.

For some reason, this inventory does not show up on RCI North America, although if RCI were smart, it would. They are going to have trouble shoveling this stuff out the door, and I expect most of it will end up as cheap rentals.

But, if you stop and think, the cottage owners are really working the RCI system. Most, if not all, of these cottages are probably rented most of the year. These owners are giving the RCI exchange system the dregs of their inventory at times they are unlikely to find renters. Since they own the properties, there is no maintenance fee, and so these are basically ''free'' deposits for them. Many are smart enough to give two weeks. For the latter, they give RCI something that essentially costs them nothing, pay a combining fee of ~US$105 and an exchange fee and they can get RCI exchanges in the ~30 points lite to ~40 points lite range. That is a bargain for them, and there is even a good chance nobody will ever check into those deep offseason weeks they have deposited. Just think if some realize they do even better to give three of these dog weeks and get ~45 to ~60 points lite to trade for top inventory with.

And timeshare owners with good weeks wonder where the better inventory goes????????????

FWIW when I first saw the cottages (they do sporadically show up in RCI Weeks NA) I immediately thought of DAE as they were the ones that seemed to carry more individual rental properties as opposed to larger prupose built timeshares.

RCI saw a way to increase their offerings in areas that are hard to get and took it.

The difference is that the cottage owners seem to be giving DAE the desirable times as well as the off season times, while RCI seems to be loaded down with just the latter. Other than a handful of October weeks, all of the cottages I saw at RCI were November and December of 2011 and there were a load of those. 2/3rds of the ''resorts'' listed under UK were cottages offering only November and early December weeks.

You don't know that. What you know is what RCI has chosen to show for exchange.

A prime example of what RCI does now is pick and choose. I know they have gotten all sizes for deposit from May to Dec 2012 for Morritts Tortuga in Grand Cayman but they have chosen to only load studio units for that entire period at this time.

Possibly by loading only the studios, they are meeting their law suit obligation to keep inventory in the exchange pool for 30 days and then will be able to rent the larger units once the 30 days is up?

It's developer inventory they can do what they want with it. "Give" it to the white label distributors, etc. The larger units will eventually hit the system it's all a matter of when and at what valuation.

I believe if an owner was crazy enough to deposit their individual week it would have to show in inventory or match an exchange request.

Of course I've been wrong before on the rare occassion. This is all a SWAG but one I'd place a bet on if I were the wagering type.

Okay, I understand the difference now.

Good point. With RCI's rental operations, anything could be happening.

FWIW the 1BRs were loaded over the weekend for resort# 2082. Six weeks after the studios. I'm still watching and waiting for the 2BRs that they have. The good news is the evil empire is still highly predictable.
