Is RCI selling lead lists?

I received a phone call this morning from Grand Pacific Resorts offering me a three-day stay with a tour, blah blah blah.

She mentioned my "recent stay at So. Lake Tahoe", which was an RCI exchange into a Wyndham property. I can't imagine that Wyndham shared their lead list with GPR. Did GPR get my info from RCI?

It seemed strange to me.

My caller I.D. said "Grand Pacific Res"

I think it's at least equally likely that somebody at the resort is selling guest info. A couple of years ago I provided my work telephone number to a concierge at a resort because I wanted to discuss some details about our stay. That is the only time I have ever provided that phone number to anyone connected with a timeshare resort. Several months after we got back I started getting calls at that number about selling my timeshare.

I agree with that. I got a call before my stay at Carlsbad Inn from a scam artist that knew my check-in date and wanted me to set up an appt to learn how to maximize my points ownership. They said RCI gave them my info but I went to their place of business and they had signs on their windows about how bad RCI was treating their members.

Perhaps RCI is, but they would be far from the only ones. I haven't used RCI for close to ten years now, and haven't been a member for at least seven years, but yet information about my ownerships and travel stilll makes it to the calling lists.

I quite agree that there are too many sellling lists. One of the regulars here gave a tip off, for example, that after Lighthouse Management Group got fired by the three timeshare resorts on the OBX they were managing and had to go out of business, they were trying to market (and probably did sell) their ''client list'' which was every member of those three resorts plus every exchanger and renter who had come in. In another case I am aware of, two resorts were in joint management with a hired manager, whom they fired. She stole the membership lists of both resorts, and was known to have turned one over to a group seeking to oust two of the directors who had been involved in her firing. That allowed them to run a stealth campaign, because if that group had asked for the list through normal channels, it would have been a tip off that something was up. That coup attempt failed, but the ex-manager was reported to the police who investigated. The police investigation may have cooled her jets for selling the list commercially, or it may not have.

Some in the past have been sure it was RCI selling the lists, due to information callers had, and others for similar reasons are certain it was others in their case. They are probably both right.

Wastegate did/does, and has paid fines.

Slightly off topic but a search of craigslist can pull up individuals selling thousands of timeshare leads. Where do these come from???

I get about 3 to 4 calls a week sometimes 2 in a day from different companies.
