I wonder what percentage of RCI deposits are people making an uptake that justifies the fee, and what percent is people depositing weeks they can't use.

It seems to me that at $34/night depositing needs to be a pretty big upgrade for trades to make economic sense...

Oh, if that's a requirement, that complicates things.

It's not, of course. But it seems like there are two reasons someone might use RCI.

              1) Get something better than what they have, or get something that they want more than what they have.

This group of people is probably economically sensitive to fees. If trading a timeshare (including RCI fees) ends up more expensive than Airbnb, renting on redweek, etc, eventually people will give up their timeshare.

              2) People who are trying to recover something for a timeshare week they can't use

For this group of people, the timeshare week is a sunk cost, and so even a ridiculous trade fee is a relatively good deal to them. This group of people will always exist (someone who owns a fixed week they usually use, but have a conflict this year, for example). However, it probably isn't a big enough group to keep RCI going.

Group (1) is the where RCI is at risk, imo. An even trade used to be a good deal with RCI, where you were paying a fee to them effectively for variety. Now the fee is getting big enough where that is a pretty expensive proposition.

In short, in most cases timesharing is not the best deal now.

That is because things in the lodging marketplace turned out the opposite of the fake news used by sales weasels last century. Vacation lodging actually got more competitive, with an abundance of bargains.

It's probably more efficient this way. In the past, I bet there was more empty vacation properties at various times, whereas now with redweek, airbnb, vrbo, ebay, craigslist, etc, anyone who wants to rent something can find a renter if they price it cheap enough.

Which makes me wonder why associations don't have the resort do that, rent out unsold and unproductive weeks, to get that source of revenue, rather than just raise fees for those who do pay. Not to mention, offer association weeks for sale, or sell Owners' weeks for a commission, themselves or through a local RE agent.

As for RCI renting deposits, other than a breach of faith to those who own, from RCI's POV, $299 from something they for free is not a bad deal, and more than an exchange fee.

Oh, I'm sorry, this is an RCI fee increase thread, not a legacy resort going belly up thread.

Ironic, now that I think about it, recommending that a "better, more economic" system for purchasing vacation lodging "resort" to the traditional system it is supposed to be better than in order to survive. That's bizarro!

Oh, that's right, RCI fee increase. Nah, don't like them.

                            • Sounds like you have a tendency to post too much. And talking to one's self is not a good sign. Old age also is a sign when you post several times in the same day on the same subject, particularly on subjects you keep commenting on.
