  • Exchanging for DVC resorts

Hey eveyone, been an RCI member for 20+ years and when they first started offering DVC vacations, I jumped on the chance. Due to me owning within the 50 mile limit, I was stopped from being able to book any more DVC resorts after my first time. My mother-in-law owned a resort in Destin, FL and we would transfer points into her account and book them that way. All in all, we have stayed at Saratoga Springs, Wilderness Lodge twice, and Animal Kingdom lodge, all two bedroom units. We now own my mother-in-laws timeshare in Destin with the hopes to just be able to book these resorts as normal, but here is my problem.

As soon as we acquired the Destin resort, we have not seen another two-bedroom DVC resort come up on RCI in three years. We have become RCI platinum members so we could do ongoing searches for every DVC resort there is in Orlando and have not seen anything but one-bedrooms. I have spoke with RCI on three different occasions about this and the first person I talked to said that our Destin resort doesn't receive enough points since it's biannual to even be able to see a two-bedroom come up. He told me I would never see a two-bedroom DVC resort unless I purchased another timeshare that received more points than a DVC resort costs in one year. I was shocked to hear this but ended up dealing with one of their vacation specialists and they told me I would just have to become a platinum member and do an ongoing search and be patient as RCI rarely gets two-bedrooms from Disney anymore.

I have asked on two other occasions if I even have the possibility to see a two-bedroom based on my ownership and never get a straight answer except for the person that said I couldn't a few years ago.

So my question is: Is anyone else seeing two-bedroom DVC resorts come up ever in the last year?

There have been almost no 2 bedroom deposits for at least two years. They have really only been putting in 1 bedroom Saratoga Springs and Old Key West on occasion. A 2 bedroom would be 50+ TPUs when it did show up.

I have been told that if you exchange for a 1 BR at SSR, you can rent a studio reasonably from an owner, and the resort will be able to put you in a lockout, effectively giving you a 2BR.
Last week SSR was up to 57 TPU which is hefty considering you also have to pay the $195 resort fee.
Not as bad as Manhattan Club though.

As others have written, 2BRs have been el-zippo since November '14.

A lot has happened in the past ten years. After the market crashed interest in travel and time shares waned considerably. For several years I saw all kinds of trade opportunities into DVC - 1, 2, 3 bedroom units as well as studios. I could trade into Boardwalk or Beach Club. Anything was possible. Prices for DVC units on the resale market plummeted.

But it's entirely different today. You see very little RCI trade possibilities into DVC, and it's all SSR. Even ongoing searches don't produce much. And resale? Very high again. In addition to RCI I also own DVC. What I now find is that it it very hard to trade with the DVC network itself. I recently was looking at the Autumn months, and outside of SSR there is very little available for September, October, or November.

So basically, it's not RCI or your own timeshare that is the problem, It's the economy and the travel mentality in general. Disney is hot stuff and the people are coming - not trading - as much. Sorry.

Ironically, after all this time and now me inquiring here, a two-bedroom unit at Key West resort just came up in my "held" reservations this morning. Unfortunately, I am not retired and cannot do the check-in of this weekend so I just released it. So I guess I can say I saw a unicorn known as a two-bedroom DVC resorts. RCI probably did it on purpose since they knew I was not renewing Platinum membership to continue ongoing searches. Looks like they got me.

All members can do an ongoing search, it is not a benefit of Platinum membership. You pay the exchange fee and and put in a request.

Can't believe you got a two bedroom. Indeed a unicorn!!!!

Platinum members do not have to pay to initiate an OGS. That is the only difference.
