This saturday morning I went to the mail box and along with all the other junk mail a mailer from RCI caught my eye.
Well done...color photos...slick card stock.
It started out, "Don't wait any longer. Turn the FairShare Plus points you've deposited into an RCI vacation."
Went on to say, "From now through August 31, 2006 you can book your vacation at one of over 150 select resorts, and get a second unit at the same resort-at the same time-for your family or friends. The only cost is an additional Exchange Fee. (Participating resorts are available for check-in from September 8, 2006 to December 16, 2006).
Well this one did not go directly into the trash...I was hooked, I made the call.
The the RCI VC operator was not familiar with the offer, so I read it to her. She then put me on hold. When she came back on line she asked me where I wanted to go. I replied that I already had a few vacations in the pipeline but the flier got my interest, where could I see the select (participating) resorts list? To which she replied, " well there are some in Virginia, most are in Florida.
I then replied, "There are thousands of affiliated resorts, do you intend to read to me those that are participating?"
At this point the VC told me, there was no way to read to me the list of those participating, nor was there a list online to read. "Where do you want to go?"
At this point I was wondering why I made the call. I told the VC that I had done direct marketing myself, understand the expense, the small percentage of persons who actually respond to the offer, and was disapointed she had not been prepaired to close the sale.
One marketing error was the failure to use a special phone number for respondants to the offer. So it would seem RCI has spent thousands of dollars in a marketing campaign, and are not even prepaired for the phone calls of those who may be drawn in and are ready to fork up two more exchange fees.
