Are Guest Certificates for Family Members Necessary?

I think it is flat out wrong to have Family Members have to get a Guest Certificate for using one of your exchanges.

If you, as a parent, allow your kids over 21 to use an exchange with or without being there, "Why should they have to have a Guest Certificate?"

I own 8 timeshare weeks. I have 4 kids that are married. Most of the time I will use all my timeshare weeks. However, my kids have used some of the weeks. The Guest Certificate Requirement only is another reeason NOT to buy anymore timeshare weeks.

When they stay at one of my home resort (not an exchange), I only need to write a letter that states I am allowing them to use my week. I assume this would be true at all Resorts.

I also believe that RCI gets all of the money and the Resorts get Nothing. So the Resorts have no reason to want a Guest Certificate. They only want to know that the people they gave the key to have the right to use the unit.

If you agree that Family Members should not need a Guest Certificate at a cost of $59, please let RCI know by posting on this Thread and on TUG's thread here.

I sent a PM to "Oualifer" asking why was it closed. I think Dave M also gets a copy of the PM. (I'm not sure about this) Either way I think Dave M opened the Exchange Forum Thread.
Thanks. There's a reason there were two postings. One was a specific question for Madge and the other was for commentary. Both were in the appropriate forums. Rocket science!

Perhaps next RCI will come up with an Owner's Certificate on top on the Exchange Fee.

PS. If anyone wants to defend RCI on the Guest Certificate, please do so with something more than, "Profit is not a bad word." , "If you don't like it drop your membership." Just give me a reason why the Guest Certificate Fee is necessary.
FYI: RCI Points is different than RCI weeks. Tiy can have 2 owners and 5 other people on the account. In other words, those 7 people would NOT have to pay Guest Fees.

RCI Guest Cert charges also went up!

I entirely agree with you about the greed of RCI ever since the DeHaan family pulled out a few years ago and Cendant took over RCI their charges have increased and the service has declined. I dumped RCI over a year ago and now use either DAE (Dial an Exchange) or Redweeks for exchanges. I can still get decent exchanges at a much lower cost. The more timesharers who see the light and resign from RCI the better for everyone.

Wow! Some Oldies have been revived lately.

***One of our resorts charges us $20 if we let a guest use one of our owned weeks.

Provided relevant family names are on the ownership deeds, the guest certs are free. This applys for points and weeks. Im lead to believe that the charge is because the higher risk of non-timesare owners damaging the unit, which does happen more often then a member breaking anything.

And if RCI accepted the responsibility of PAYING for those damages then the Guest Certificate would be sort of an insurance payment. Since you the owner or maker of the exchange are responsible for damages done by your "GUESTS", then the issue of the GC is nothing more than another way for RCI to fleece its members.

Exactly, it is not an insurance but extra income for the Cendant coffers. People do it online so what does it really cost them?

In the Good Ole DeHaan days, everything was covered by the subscription fee. Then, Cendant decided to charge for the things people like to do with their membership . . . transfer Spacebanked Weeks, let a guest use an exchange, etc. Sorta like the country club . . . you pay to be a member and then you pay for everything you do.

I suspect a deposit fee will be next.

                      Oops, I didn't say that.

If they are joint owners on the week you are exchanging it should be free guest certs. Provided that RCI have all relevant paperwork stating so.... always legalities

I added my daughter to my points account and was told that I could also add her to my weeks account . All you have to do is write a letter to Member Services telling them to add another name and both sign it. Fax it in and in a few weeks the other person wll be added to your account. No charge for this service. Then you will not have to buy any guest certificates. My daughter signs in and makes reservations using her own credit card. Works fine for us.

Her name is not on the deed just the RCI account. I believe you can add up to five names.

                                Just the facts:

                                Hello,

                                Thank you for your e-mail.

An RCI membership is a separate legal asset from the timeshare itself.
RCI Weeks memberships may contain up to two names and one mailing address.

In an attempt to further increase our ability to provide innovative
customer service, RCI is now offering members a Partial Guest Pass. The
Partial Guest Pass allows the guest access to Extra Vacations as needed
without requiring member authorization each time. Guests may also
access members' one-for-one exchanges but only after the member
authorizes the use of a specific deposit. Specifically, members must
still call to authorize a guest to use a deposited week.

The Partial Guest Pass is offered in both five and ten-year increments.
                                A five-year Partial Guest Pass is $149 USD/$185 CD. A ten-year Partial
Guest Pass is $249 USD/$308 CD. By purchasing a Partial Guest Pass,
there is no need to charge the $59 USD/$73 CD Guest Certificate fee
every time a confirmation is made for the guest designated on the
Partial Guest Pass, and transactions are unlimited. A separate Partial
Guest Pass must be purchased for each guest. Please note there are no
spousal privileges. Although Partial Guest Passes may be cancelled by
the member, this program does not offer refunds.

                                Kind Regards,
