  • Timeshare Units for Travel Agents to peddle

THIS WAS A THREAD POSTED ON TUG ON 10-25. I WANTED RCI'S EXPLANATION BUT TO DATE MADGE HAS NOT ENTERED. I FOUND THE POSTING IN THE RCI SECTION OF TUG LAST NIGHT AND FOUND THAT THIS ENTRY HAD 380 VIEWS AND NO REPLIES. I KNOW OF SEVERAL REPLIES AS I SAVED THEM. I WENT BACK TO CHECK MY THREAD THIS MORNING AND IT HAS DISAPPEARED, ALL VERY STRANGE!

Madge - I have a few questions I'd like for you to answer, please.

I am a travel agent (& a TS owner). In the October 2 issue of 'Travel Agent' magazine, there was an article that told of how RCI is now making condos, villas, & houses available to travel agents to rent to their clients. In order to get 1st hand knowledge of how wonderful the timeshare condo experience is, RCI is giving travel agents a 25% discount off rental fees if units are rented for themselves. Lastly, through the end of 2006 and during special promotions thereafter, travel agents can make 20% commission on rentals they arrange.

I logged onto the website listed in the article and sure enough, it was timeshare resorts that were listed for rent. These were not excess inventory: Hawaii any time of year, coastal So CA in the San Diego area during Del Mar race season, coastal FL any time of year, etc. The rental fees for these units were reasonable.

My questions to you, Madge, are:
    1. From what inventory are these weeks being made available from? Spacebanked weeks program? Points program?
    2. Why, as a timeshare owner requesting an exchange into Hawaii, am I told by an RCI VC that there is a 2 year wait, but as a travel agent, I can book a week for the spring of 2007 and at a 25% discount to boot?
    3. Why is RCI not honoring what they promised their paying members - namely, the availability of units in desirable locations when they spacebanked their weeks for the use of other MEMBERS?

Not so strange really. Having an exchange company on a site entails a certain degree of protection to make such a presence palatable. I feel that there is nothing wrong with affording some protection, but find that sometimes in some places this protection can be stifling, such as with this question. Going too far with protection makes the participation of an exchange company self-serving and somewhat worthless to the community. In the recent past someone even questioned if a staff member of a timeshare site with RCI present was on the RCI payroll. On the other hand, RCI certainly would not want to answer a question such as this while relevant litigation against them was in effect.

Those replies were removed by the moderator as the Ask RCI forum is just that. A place to ask questions of RCI. Those questions are answered in the order posted, therefore everytime someone posts a reply to a question asked it moves the thread to the bottom of the list.

By removing the replies, the moderator insured your post remained in the order it was posted for a possible response from Madge, the RCI rep on the forum.

The thread has not disappeared. Just the replies to your post.

          Hope that explanation helps.....

How so? I am a MULTIPLE timeshare owner. I believe in timeshares. I consider THIS forum to be an honest evaluater of what is going on in the industry. I ASKED A LEGITIMATE QUESTION - EVERYONE that owns a timeshare is entitled to an answer. DAVE DID NOT DO THE OWNERS OF TIMESHARES A FAVOR! PERIOD!

Penalize me if you choose! Drop me! Prove that TimeshareForums is just another pawn for RCI etc. We KNOW TUG is! I thought TimeshareForums was different - I KNOW that the members are.

I can ALWAYS resurrect myself with another name - another E-Mail address etc. I AM SIMPLY LOOKING OUT FOR FELLOW OWNERS IN THE TIMESHARE INDUSTRY.

Dave is a great guy. I think he meant well when he deleted those other posts. Madge is going to give a canned answer, anyway, and Dave would be the first to admit that she will not be able to give an answer that will satisfy the 14,000 TUG members.

Let's be fair to the administrators at TUG because they are all volunteers and are not trying to stop the question to Madge.

Since the Ask RCI forum does not allow discussions, it would be a good idea IMHO to start a discussion of that topic in one of the other TUG forums, like maybe the Exchange one. In fact, that is what TUG admins recommend people do instead of posting replies. I think this issue would be of interest to many RCI members.
