Hawaii is being pulled like crazy right now because of all of the cancellations of flights. two carriers just went belly up leaving there costumers stranded. So they canceled there rooms rather than paying triple for air fare.

My point is it isn't just Hawaii. Hawaii has always had an outrageous 14 day window. You could always play chicken there.

Last time we played chicken we got the Kona Village Resort (actually in the 30 day window, not 14). I will be happy to book last minute and get better resorts. I'm not really worried about nothing popping up.

It is doable. But it takes a lot of time/effort. For those of us addicts who put the time in anyway, it seems worthwhile. For anything off/shoulder season, I think it's a great way to go. Holidays/summer/etc, much more of a nail-biter, but I am going to Marco Island on Saturday

Of course the more of us that play, the greater the challenge...

I had an ongoing search for May for resorts in Sante Fe or Southern Calif coastal area. No matches, although I saw several weeks available on extra vacations. My husband and I made other plans. Today, I got a call from RCI saying they had a 5/2 check-in for Sante Fe.

If they had offered this to me a month ago, I would've taken it. I suspect they had no takers on the rental market and finally decided to break down and put it in the exchange pool. Unless you live within driving distance, who is going to be able to wait until less than 2 weeks out to make travel plans?

I believe the old 45-day window is now down to 14 days for anything worthwhile.

It is called playing chicken. You buy your air, book a cancellable hotel and put that on-going search in. and wait RCI out. Some areas, like Hawaii, are notorious for having great LM stuff.

Santa Fe wouldn't be one of them with only 3 smaller resorts.

To be honest with you, I lost my nerve about 6 months prior to my last Easter's break and took HGVC S Beach instead; but have been surprised to see the stuff that eventually popped up in SW Florida for the week I needed this year.
