modifying an RCI request/effect on place in queue

You can change anything you want in your ongoing search and not lose your place in line. The start date of the search remains the same. If you cancel the search, then you start all over again.

I thought I had posted to this thread before about this - my memory cells have really faded since having a third child...

I have always been under the impression that this is the case - as long as you don't cancel your search, you keep your original place in the queue.
