  • Can I get out of RCI with a resale week?

    Hi there,

I won an eBay auction for a unit that I just found was converted to RCI points in 2007. I need the unit out of RCI by 2009 no matter what. Is there a way to get it out of RCI since I am a new owner or am I stuck with the 3 year committment that the previous owner started?

    Thank you!

    Katherine

Why? you can get the unit, no matter if it is converted or not. Don't know when the old owner get his(her) RCI point membership, once it is 3 year, it will end if you really want out. But you can talk to the closing company and/or RCI if you want it out today.

So then she CAN just opt on now by telling RCI she will not pay for a point account? Or is it more involved then that???- She needs to as she wants to convert the week into another program and it can NOT be in RCI points to do that...

When she bought the old contract, she needs to tell the closing company what she want. The default is to keep the RCI point. But there is no contract relationship between she and RCI point. It is upto her decision to determine if she still want continue the relationship. Only when she decides to take it, there is a contract between she and RCI. Generally, after the deed was completed recorded by closing company on the local government, and the resort now get closing company ownership transfer form, and take her as new owner, the closing company can get transfer ownership form from RCI, and transfer the point account from old owner to her. So in the transfer form, she can choose not to continue.

However, it also depends on the closing companies. Some compay has no business in doing TS transaction. If it happens to be that kind of company, she may need to tell closing company stop at the last step and do whatever she likes. And she may need to work with both RCI and the closing company to get whatever she wants.

But why not hold on to the point account, play it for no more than 3 years. And end the relationship if there is no added value. Otherwise, if for some reason she wants to add it back, it may take another resort conversion, which will be much hogher than RCI point account fee.

ps. I saw the reason after post, better call the other program to make sure it is doable. If it is Wyndham, it is not suppose doable. Once a resort is in RCI points, no matter if your week converted or not, it should not be able to PIC. However, Wynhdam has very loosely position when they try to complete the sale. So, I would not see any problem to have it go through sale process and get to VIP or Gold VIP. But they do from time to time go with RCI to clean up the account. Not sure what will be the rules for WM or Bluegreen, the OP needs to check with the program first to make sure they can accept the week as long as it is not in RCI point

Jya-Ning - as always, thanks for the great explaination - it is a Sheraton/Starwood week - so it sounds as if by simply 'declining' to sign the RCI points agreement/account sign-up, the week will not be in points.

Katherine - are u able to choose the closing company? - you can check with Janet at JRA JRA Services / timeshare closings made easy to see if she can handle this for you.
