  • RCI has new Parent Wyndham

CENDANT'S HOSPITALITY SPIN-OFF TO BE NAMED WYNDHAM WORLDWIDE

    http://www.cendant.com/media/press_r...&release=12021

To further leverage RCI's unique brand equity in the timeshare exchange businesses, and in recognition of the recent integration of RCI with our European vacation rental businesses, the combined vacation exchange and rental businesses will be renamed the RCI Global Vacation Network.

Note that they left exchange out of the title...hmmm.

I got an email from Inside Guy a couple hours ago and he mentioned Wyndham Worldwide. Of course, it didn't make any sense to me.

It's still just Cendant gobbly-gook, but at least I now know what he was talking about.

You know what they say in the direct sales business, if you can't dazzle them with brilliance, baffle them with --------.

Actually, Wyndham's hotel chain is being handled by a section of Cendant's Hospitality Division, a spin-off of the department that books hotel rooms for Travelodge, Super8, Ramada, etc.

In the hotel division, this is like when RCI created specialty departments like HGVC, Fairfield, etc.

The reference to Wyndham's resorts is somewhat vague, but RCI will not be directly working with Wyndham except to accept deposits of weeks for exchange/rental etc. from Wyndham timeshares.

I realize us heathens here in the sticks get lost when y'all start talking about high-falootin big business, contemporary business models, and so forth, but I am getting exactly the opposite impression from Inside Guy.

I suspect that this is beyond the realm of either you or me. As they say in the movies when the Fed trumps the local cop, "Above our pay grade!"

Something tells me that they may not have it all worked out yet. So if you don't understand it, don't feel bad! I bet it takes years to get a new system in place.

Didn't Cendant buy Wyndham just a little while back ?

                Here's my take:
When I read the release it appears that they bought THE NAME, not the Wyndham resorts/hotels, just the name.

I know there are some WM owners implying that FF and WM will have access to all the Wyndham hotels/resorts but I'm not reading that ANYWHERE in the release....

I also would be shocked to see that WM would get to use any of the FF resort being built on Hawaii (Ohau)sp. I think there is a lot of wishful thinking and misinformation being put out by WM owners again.

                Anyone else want to comment?

RCI was better as an orphan

If you think about, timesharing was a lot better off when RCI was an orphan and had no parent. As an independent company, RCI really seemed to care about all aspects of timesharing. As part of a conglomerate, it is all about money grubbing. I doubt we'll be lucky enough to see Cendant spin off RCI as a completely seperate company again, and timesharing is poorer for that.

I actually think RCI will be killed off within the next 10 years (5 yrs might be too soon to accomplish).

Cendant doesn't need their horrible legacy software as it has superior reservation systems elsewhere under its umbrella. It would be far cheaper to integrate all the ops into one big database and just slap on branded interfaces.

They don't need so many humans as they revamp and automate - RCI still operates way too manually. Call center turnover is expensive.

They actually don't need RCI once they've herded the members they can salvage off to other "families".

They can cut a lot of costs by shutting down RCI and I think they will. Too many internet tales of woe can be found under that name. Revamp and rename - leaves the messy past behind.

As the saying goes, "the more things change, the more they stay the same"!

As Cendant splits into it's new entities, the hospitality division will get the new name as indicated in the original press release. They will continue to book rooms at the various hotel/motel chains. Cendant obtaining the Wyndham name is just like Toyota calling its higher-market line cars Lexus, its just to have a recognizable name in the hospitality industry. Wyndham sounds classier than if they placed all these under Super8 or Howard Johnson's.

RCI will continue to exchange and rent timeshare on weekly and nightly basis.

Many members, when speaking to me, will say "Oh I own Worldmark, and they said they own RCI..." Same for Fairfield, Starwood, Hilton, etc. They just aren't aware of the relationship RCI has with these timeshares.
