Does anyone know if Hawaii is available on Bonus Weeks on short notice? Curt, would Hawaii even interest you? The killer is the airfare.
I looked under "deposit your weeks" on the RCI site and can see no difference between the '08, '09 and '10 weeks that are listed there. I know '09 is my only deeded week. That seems to bode well for me yes?

I love what you're saying. Do you just rent 'em out to friends/family/aquaintances? How do you do it, how much do you get? That place looks real nice...

So again to the "free" weeks, are they totally useless? I'd pretty much staked vacations for my wife and I on those and giving the deeded weeks to the folks.

I have booked some great Vacations with the bonus certs. I received 3 Bonus weeks for 3 Years I used 7 of them. 2 expired. I booked only one on the beach at Resort 66 & I let a friend use it. Booked many to places I never even thought of visiting. Mesquite NV, - Fairfield Glade, TN, - Sheridan, IL - French Lick, IN - Barrie, Ontario Orlando, FL and a few more.

I was told by a RCI Rep when trying to use my second one (First one was hard to book because I was wanting Las Vegas) that let them know when you want to travel and they can tell you everything available in the Eastern half of the US or the Western half of the US. According to her there is always something available. I did get alot of Branson and Orlando offers. I always held out for something different and have enjoyed every vacation I booked on the certificates. I never checked the Caribbean but it seems like the Units available were about the same as Last call vacations and there is always Dominican Republic and all inclusive resorts in Mexico.

After all that, Enjoy them because you can still visit Grandview and go visit a few places you may have never thought of visiting.

Check the All-Inclusive rates, some of them are reasonable, but others are quite high..

You are not permitted to rent your RCI weeks (it violates their rules, and they are NOT nice about it), you CAN rent your deeded week. Brother Coony owns some pretty hot properties, I'm not sure how many Las Vegas weeks he rents out

I'm not sure why your RCI account is showing so many years, but fear it may be a system error. I'm guessing if you hit "deposit," it will take them some time to figure out you don't actually own a week every year, but they won't allow an exchange until your deposit is "cleared" by your home resort... I could be wrong, and I don't want to be the hamster of doom, but with RCI, if it seems to good to be true, it ain't true...

I think you're right, I tried deposting the '08 week and it says I can't deposit it directly but have to go through my home resort which appears to be annoying.

I did find a certificate for bonus weeks (3 for 3 years) yesterday which I'm going to try to use for this trip... Mexico sounds like a good idea too.

Question: I can't rent my "free" weeks, can I give them to my inlaws? They don't have a lot of cash and one of the reasons we bought the TS was to help them go on vacation.

You are allowed to give away any week that you exchange through RCI. To play by the rules, you are even allowed to recoup your "exchange fee" and the fee for the "guest certificate" that RCI wants $39 or $49 for if someone other than you is checking in..

I have a question about what would constitute the "exchange fee" for a Bonus Week, There will be some cost associated with the Bonus Week, it may vary depending on the week you book. I'm not sure how much of that is considered an "exchange fee." If anyone else watching this thread is more familiar with Bonus Week fees, please jump in.

I'm not that familiar with Bonus Week fees, but I would assume that it's "legal" to let your friend or relative reimburse you for the full cost of the Bonus Week. In general, I think RCI allows full reimbursement of the fees required to make that particular booking through them.

Curt, there is a fair amount of value in being eligible to join RCI and other companies that exchange timeshares. By being a member, you are often able to rent surplus timeshare weeks that either are not available to the general public at all, or that are only available for a higher price. If your resort is dual-affiliated with II, you may want to join II as their rental inventory is excellent and includes many units, especially in Marriott resorts, that are simply not available to the general public (except by renting directly from the resort at a much higher price.) Dial-an-exchange, while they have mostly lower quality resorts, is free to join and often has some nice last-minute rentals. If your resort qualifies for SFX, that's another free company, and they have very high-quality last minute rentals.

RCI Bonus weeks, in my experience, often don't offer much savings over RCI's regular rentals, so I've never found a use for mine. However, you will still get the benefit of owning a timeshare, so even if the Bonus Weeks have no value, being a timeshare owner may have value, even in the off-years. A piece of good news is that $5k is a lot less than most people spend (or lose) on their first TS. And, yes, the $99 annual fee is very low. (Be aware, though, that it is likely to go up once the resort is no longer in active sales.)

As for whether you want to use timeshares or not, if you really don't, I would say get rid of this week, take the loss, and move on. But, if you are going to spend time looking for good trades, it's worth eventually having something that fits your needs well. That may or may not be this particular week; I really don't know.

Since you have a flexible schedule you should look into the cheap last minute RCI rental sites. You do not have to be an RCI member to use them. It comes out to about $360 for a full week.

You do need to meet the criteria depending on the site.

                      Curt,
You'll do just fine. The sightings (exchange opportunities - ex opps) here are the best around and they really help you maximize trading.
I traded a blue Nantucket week - RCi for a two bedroom at the Crane in Barbados (Sept. - their slow month) and it was the best ! I even bought a resale week there.
So, please know that you can do very well, but it requires patience, timing and the help of the wunderbar folks here who nab us with great sightings.
Off to the Harborside Atlantis tomorrow (thanks to a sighting here) !
                      B.

                        Hi Curt,

6 years ago, I also bought in at The Cliffs Resort in Vegas with high hopes about RCI, only to be disappointed with their lack of and/or bad customer service! But I learned how to make the most out of it and my family has been enjoying our vacations since. Btw, that Extra Vacation is really hard to use as there are a lot of restrictions and it almost always doesn't work (i.e. the only availability is during the hurricane season in affected areas, or something like that.) But 2x I got lucky and was able to book at a nice ski resort in Canada during the ski season! So I hope you get something like that too.

                        Best of luck,
                        Jennifer
