Actually, because of the tough times, that is not exactly the case. Folks aren't going to their own resorts their own weeks. I know because I was there and they were. Sanibel was practically a ghost town.

But, playing with the same set of facts as you and coming out with a different conclusion, these are people who normal do use their own weeks. Many of them don't belong to an exchange company. They get more for renting their weeks. The report I got from owners where we stayed is they get $1400. That beats giving it to an exchange company.

& for those who belong to an exchange company, because their decisions not to go came late, they did not deposit, but tried to rent instead.

I called the week before we went and could have gotten rentals for all of January because of cancellations.

Are there usually SCal prime beach weeks available for summer at the end of April? I would think anyone wanting SCal in summer has been searching or had an on going search going for months. If I owned a SCal dog (if there is such a thing) I would figure out a way to deposit for points. Then I do not think it would show up in weeks search, I think I am right about that. I assume most people who own prime SCal have always either used them or rented them out. We own 4 weeks in Kauai and have never deposited them and never intend to. If we choose not to us them all they are much more valuable on the rental market than as a deposit. Many of the resorts listed as RCI afiliated have a small percentage of units that belong to RCI and only some of them are actively trading. We joined for access to extra vacations. We do some trading but RCI only gets our studio Mayan Palace units because SFX will not take the studio portion. I deposit if I have purchased something and purchase date does not allow desirable reservation or something interferes with using a unit I had planned on using. I have always wondered if the people looking last minute want to go to a place to go or want to go and are looking for a place.

        pk:

Yes, at this time SOCAL summer would be slim, but we have people here who have been searching RCI.com almost daily for 12 years.

They have a pretty good feel for what should be there.

        There should be some.
